Well, its not easy or practical to design one that's truly 'idiot-proof'. For example, to address things such as this:- "What if someone tilts a well-heated gasoline lantern a little and tries to open the filler cap while its operating"?
Thanks, Jeremy Didn't mean anything by the comments. It wasn't ment to hurt anyone. Coleman knew even long ago that no matter how you presented the lanterns/lamps to a customer there would always be someone who simply could not, or for some reason would not follow directions. Therefore, he basically had to make the product "idiot proof" OVER BUILD IT!! That's probably one reason we find so many Coleman lanterns 75, or even 100 years old and still in working condition. I have two Coleman Air-O-Lanterns over 100 years old. Well built lanterns!
