I picked up a near perfect Aladdin Model 21 complete with chimney last week, rather pleased as it was a conspicuous gap in my collection...

Hi guys. Can you perhaps consider posting your lamps in separate topics? This thread is getting ridiculously long by now, and it contains a wide variety of things that actually often could earn a place entirely of their own... The simple fact that they are "non-pressure lamps" doesn't mean they all has to be piled up under the same topic. This is the Open forum! Post whatever you want! That's the general idea with it. But why keep posting under the same bloody header all the time?
Otherwise, might I suggest garlic, a silver bullet, Holy water, a wooden stake through its heart, the sign of the cross or a shaft of strong sunlight - or any combination of two or more of the aforementioned. Maybe it'll take all six to finally kill it off...
I have two now. An Aluminum fount Aladdin Caboose Lamp,. This fount has no fuel fill or cap, requiring you to remove the burner to fill the fount. And as of a couple of weeks ago I now own this Rayo.
Chip, you have the wrong chimney on that lamp. Clearly it works, but that chimney is for a Matador type burner. Nothing audible, but it does burn very bright and with an almost uncanny steadiness for better than 8 hours on a winding, and needs no chimney.
It uses an ordinary flat wick. The clockwork powers a ducted fan, almost like the impeller of a water pump.
Yes, I know it has a Matador Chimney on it. It came with no wick or chimney. I had seen Pics of a couple running with matadors, and liked the way they looked. So that is what I ordered. For a $12 chimney I think it works well.
Good to hear Chip. Phil, I've never seen or heard of such a forced draught lamp, so that's my ignorance showing! I'm guessing the air is forced up and around the wick holder within the brass dome and wick slot making the burn brighter. Thanks for dismantling the 'works' and showing. Very clean. Just taken a look, and see that is the case. Two for sale on Ebay - very expensive!
It would be interesting to see how that forced draught lamp might go with a short chimney of about 6" or so. I'm not thinking the chimney should do much to the air flow or the flame which look fine as it is - I just prefer a naked flame to be kept "caged". I suppose used open it could be useful for lighting up fags - if that is relevant any more. For sure it is a fascinating thing and I had no idea they existed.
They would normally have a globe shaped glass shade to diffuse the light (and protect against drafts or breezes) , similar to the ones on some duplex lamps.
yes, had some before my pressure obsession and will probably get some more now and then when a cheap opportunity knocks.
