Hi everyone, I hope I’ve pick the right section. I’ve just acquired a X246A and I’m looking to restore it. It needs a whole new seal kit, a globe, a burner and possibly a frame. I’ve had a troll around the net and these parts seem to be in the hens teeth catagory. Are any of the bits interchangeable with the 246B (can’t seem to find a parts blowup) or have I really got my work cut out for me. Absolutely any advice will be gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
Evening @David Lawlor and welcome aboard, the X246 range is pretty interchangeable above the control cock. You'll find lots of information in tbis forum. Replacement seals can be found in the Fettlebox - see home page
Hi David, I'm a newbie here too, had lots of help and encouragement here... You may find that you'll get infected with the bug... Good luck with the lamp. Fettlebox products are A1, no worries there. Stevie
That frame looks OK to me. A good clean, paint it silver and it'l be like new. The seal kits are available from the FettleBox here and for the control on your lamp you want the old style kit for X246 not the one for X246B. The pump seems to be missing although you don't mention it but if it is then you want a pump from an X246 or X246A not from an X246B which is an 'orrible alloy abortion. ::Neil::
Yes I have got the pump and it is an original brass one although not in the best of condition. Will the seal kits you mention cover all the seals required for a complete refurb? Also the hood, after a wipe down, is showing some signs of rust flaking and pitting which I will need to treat. I was was thinking of going down the road of VHT paint in black gloss. Is this the way to go or do you know of better products?
Yes the X246 seal kit will do everything for you. The hood is in normal condition. They do rust some. I have never seen a gloss VHT paint. It will work OK on a hood but you will have a matt finish. Anything else you try on the hood won't stand the heat. I have seen worse but perhaps better to find a newer looking one from the Bay. I know it's 90 miles but you might consider a run up here. I have all the seals to fettle an X246A and things like spare pumps and such. I might even have a better looking hood. You should be able to leave here with a working lantern. Be a free service too. ::Neil::
That is indeed a very kind offer. Where abouts are you in Hertfordshire are you. Handy if you’re near a station as I get free train travel as a work perk
That's a good lamp to start youd jou ey with pressure lamps. The hood is usable, I have some in much worse condition which are still functional. Base-camp are in Littlehampton, they might have some bits, but if you're happy to travel I'd pop up and see Mackburner. We have a small occasional gathering in East Sussex, we'll post details of ghe next one we plan on this forum, you'd be welcome to come along.
Near is relative. 4 or 5 miles maybe. Harpenden is the nearest. Not a problem though as I can collect and deliver easily enough. Only problem could be using a train might limit your ability to haul vast quantities of stuff back. ::Neil::
Just wanted at this point to thank everyone for the advice given thus far. I was worried at first that my shed find may have been a non starter but now I can see a light at the end of this tunnel.
