I was invited to come and look at a few lamps today which had been brought back to Scotland from Zimbabwe many years ago. The seller didn’t want to hang on to any so it was all or nothin! What a haul of lamps, spares and globes. I left John to load the car (those of you of a nervous disposition should look away now!) and luckily he left just a wee kypie for Roxy. You can just see her peering over the load.
Why doesn't this ever happen to me!!!!!!! yup lots of common place but also some gems in there as well. So if you want to share in your windfall? lol Martin
@Jean J Now what would a wee lassie such as yourself be wanting with so many lamps? Green with envy! Regards Jeremy
Those globes won't survive another trip like that, you must have really smooth streets over there, you're lucky! I'm still shaking thinking about that "glassy metallous" hard rock song you've played in your car stereo during your trip back home Congratulations, I hope it was a bargain! Nicola
A good selection of shiny beauties. Maybe they didn't have time to keep up with the polishing. Looks like someone has tried to convert an X246b into a heater?
Yes indeed some ‘gems’ but too many X246s. One does have a domed insect screen, but Kayen? I’m not so sure. Most of the table lamps are fitted with the normal flat bug screen. The brass X246 has been converted to electricity. I’m going to get John to wire it up just for fun. Most exciting are the spares many of them NOS. For example approx 90 wire cleaners for 169 vapourisers. Nicola, they were a bargain, the seller refused to take what I offered because it was too much, he just wanted them gone. He did eventually accept half of what I offered originally and threw in lunch besides!
Some real gems in there. THREE X410s, IL47, 1960 TL116 and what looks like a nice Optimus or Petromax lantern or two. Worth it just for those few. What a great haul. ::Neil::
Can't compete with that haul but I did manage to pick up 8 vapalux / Bialaddin lamps including a couple of gems and 2 x v60 globes with lighting holes for peanuts a few months ago. Just got to keep looking and you hopefully drop lucky once in a while.
@Jean J Are you willing to trade some items? If yes please may you send me a pm. Many thanks. Regards Jeremy
Holy moley! That is one amazing haul, but so many speculum 246 lamps? And isn't that an old green Coleman at the back? I think you're going to need a bigger house soon.
Here are some pics of the spares and things I came home with on Thursday. Can someone identify the wee bit bottom left, has the number 3586 on packet? Also the large Tilley knob top right? And has anyone seen these wire guards, four or five of the X246s were fitted with these instead of a globe. Anyone looking for used pumps?
Well that would certainly keep me fettling for a while but I can just about imagine what the wife would say if I arrived home with a car load like that.
It helps that I’m the Tilley enthusiast and not John. Also, he has never owned a car he could be proud of so it doesn’t matter what’s packed into it so long as the dog can get in!
Hello Jean, that's a great haul of spares! Perhaps you could take separate photos of the parts which you want identified. Those wire guards are new to me. The pump with the string tied to it which is shown at the bottom of the photograph, is a late 1960's/1970's replacement pump and it's rare and you have 5 of them! Perhaps you could add a photo of it in the gallery which is shown via the link below. Tilley
@JEFF JOHNSON I wondered about the wire guards too. Do you reckon they were a Tilley export special or made in Zimbabwe? Without evidence I’d probably plump for a Tilley Special. Regards Jeremy
Would love to help you with your problem Jean, that Il47 looks like it’s missing it’s suspension chains, just like my collection is missing an Il47. Can’t imagine it would be difficult to make the parts.
Found the chains and smoke bell in the bottom of a box Matthew. Must post a pic of the pump on the donut tomorrow, not sure if it’s original or made up but apparently it was always used that way. I even have the bike pump too! What did you make of the steel mesh guard/globe?
It's not the clutter in the car that's the problem Jean the inside of my car more resembles a works van, where to store them would be the problem here, my shed is stuffed full of lamps, a large number of primus stoves, bits of old British motor bikes along with the associated tools, new finds are now invading the house which can draw caustic comments. If offered a haul of lamps like you have I would probably buy another shed, well totally sane people can be so boring.
Damn, but I’d still be willing to store it for you. Not sure on those mesh globes, they certainly look well made, if you could post some close up shots of them when you’re taking pictures next. Show us the joins and the welds if possible, see how professional they look. Maybe they were produced 3rd party in Zimbabwe as a more sturdy alternative, the base plate looks like it is shaped similarly to the glass globes, but perhaps that’s just the picture. Fantastic score anyway, love the BR pre heaters especially the box. I think the parts bottom left in the envelopes are spares for Tilley irons, as are the knobs in the box top right.
