Does anyone know where to get a good deal on Coleman Fuel in the uk? Had a nose on fleabay and it seems to be about £10 a litre with postage (ouch). Alternatively is there anyway you can put an additive ( fuel treatment like the stuff you can get for diesel ) or refine it without blowing the shed up?
When it comes to Coleman fuel in the U.K., I don't think "a good deal" exists. An excellent alternative, though still a little pricey, is Aspen 4T at around £20 for 5 litres. Another alternative is panel wipe but be aware there are a few different sorts, if you choose panel wipe, make sure that it's NAPHTHA based. Henry.
Edit: Henry beat me to it. I use Aspen4. Pure fuel and to me as good as Coleman Fuel. Aspen4 properties here. Where to buy it, here. Coleman fuel in the UK £50. Aspen4 £20.
Here in the US, i think the alternative "Aspen 4" is what we call "tru-fuel" and it is marketed as ethanol free gasoline for the outdoor power equipment market. I can say we have perked about 100 pots of coffee on a old coleman stove using this as a fuel and have noted no issues with the generator or BTU output. I happen to work at a small engine repair shop and we get this ethanol free fuel (95 octane) in 55 gallon drums so we perk our own coffee back in the maintenance shop as opposed to the drip maker the front counter people drink
@a10egress I looked at the price of tru-fuel here in Oregon, $18 per gallon can. Coleman fuel is only $14, and Crown is about $8 if you shop there.
And another, even cheaper alternative... Holts Brake Cleaner At £12.45 for 5Ltrs plus free delivery that's gonna be hard very to beat. (In fact I've just bought some more while it's so cheap!)
@goldwinger11 Yes, over the counter sales it is very spendy but we buy such bulk, we get huge discounts. I was more just chiming in to say its a viable alternative depending on price and availability.
Found an alternative/equivalent to Aspen4 in UK today. Stihl MotoPlus 4 Stroke. Also branded as Viking as I believe the companies have/are merging, Stihl and Viking. Bought 5 litres at Ernest Doe for £18. UN1203 classification
Help me, what's wrong with plain old gasoline? I've used this forever and it's served me just fine. Is it the cost, gummy deposits, additives, what? Put a cap full of carb/injector cleaner every third tank and everything will be fine.
Pete, you would be surprised! Really, I have reached the point where my hands actually hurt (arthritis) so bad I have trouble pumping up the lanterns. A gallon of gasoline will last for months in my case. It's costing me about $2.45 a gallon for gasoline. The last time I bought kerosene it was almost $3.00 a gallon! Probably more now...
@george saddened to hear about your arthritis, I hope you can find some relief. Fuel is getting dearer everywhere. Gone are the halcyon days when fuel cost was not as a great concern as it is today. So now we must look for the best bang for our buck that we can whilst achieving reliable lamp performance. Cheers Pete
I used to use pump gas. Trick was to never store your equipment with pump gas in it. Easy with one stove and one lantern to keep track of. Now I have too many stoves and lanterns in rotation to keep track of what is burning which fuel and keep them rotated so pump gas doesn't go bad. I may pull out a stove for a brew up and then not again for many months. I also have stoves now whose manufacturer has long since closed up shop and for which new generators are effectively not available. Doing all I can to prolong the life of your existing parts is only smart. No more pump gas for me.
Until I read this thread, I had never heard of Aspen 4 (or 2 for that matter). Checking on the t'interweb I found a local stockist and bought a litre to try in my GR6S miner's lamp. I was impressed as it is odourless when burning and therefore a great improvement over Coleman fuel, which stinks. The only down side was a reluctance to ignite with the flint wheel.
Sounds about right. I bought one litre for a fiver to test it...and it's great in my Optimus 324 and Coleman lantern. I've since found and bought 5 litres of Stihl Motoplus which, is the same stuff, for 18 quid! Haven't tested it yet but the UN1203 designation is the same as Aspen4. I filled up my car today (regular unleaded) and checked out Esso Supreme+ 97 octane with the staff. They say it does not contain ethanol.
£10.56 p delivered to you very quickly Uk addresess ( check though some areas not covered ) .. zorotoolsuk ... Ebay ....
Yes they are both alkylate petrol. Any alkylate petrol will do for our lamps. Aspen is just a more expensive brand than most others, but luckily we have it on pumps here in Sweden (it´s a Swedish product) to a fairly cheap cost. Since the small 4 or 5 litre containers has begun to be sold in larger quantities also in other European countries, maybe you may get lucky and also see the filling stations pop up here and there in the future.
I didn't realise it was a Svenska product. Maybe I'll use it in my old Saab! Bioenthanol is using up a lot of land and resources that could feed people.
Oh, yes! Aspen is all Swedish. Oh well, not the initial crude oil, of course... Your SAAB should actually run fine on it I have been using it on cars on occasions, but only out of necessity for some reasons. I do run my old petrol tractor on it all the time, though. And also the old two-strike motor cycles. Smells lovely!
Dont breathe in too much! I wish SAAB was still Swedish. Good late model cars are becoming difficult to find here in UK. I may have to go to Audi.... Maybe Volvo? Do Volvos run on Aspen!
