Not that I am aware of. There were a few makes out there from after WW2 such as Camplete, Dura-Camp, Elektron, Esuya, Hakukosha, Kamishima, Nobel, Rinnai and Y-O-Lite. All as far as I know have ceased trading in lamps although Nobel might just still be there. There was also a Snow Peak gasoline lantern fairly recently although I think they just do LPG stuff now. ::Neil::
Stevie I know I’m tempting you into the dark arts, but if you want to pick up something in Japan (Tokyo), buy a Manaslu camping stove. These are well made in the old tradition. See here: https://item.rakuten.co.jp/oxtos/10000999/?s-id=xb_shop_001 Cheers Tony @BigStevie
Well, I do have a stove or three already... though I find lamps more endearing. My initial three lamp start up last December is now at fourteen(!). That is a very pretty stove and I'll find it difficult not to buy one, also my other half who still hasn't quite understood my lamp fetish does like a camp stove. When I was younger I lived in Japan for fifteen years, so the place isn't new to me, my youngest son is working out there at the moment (hence the trip). I 'll get him on to it before I go out so not to get disappointed! I'd really like to find an old Japanese lamp or two, but Japan doesn't do old. I'll get up country into the rural areas and see what I can find. Time to start brushing up my nihongo! Stevie
My eldest son, Japanese Wife and our beautiful grandson live in Chiba Tokyo. I’ll have to ask him to be on the lookout for lamps for me ...... never thought of that before ....... go figure!
Good luck with that. I have only ever heard of one Y-O-Lite turning up in the past 20 years or so. You are more likley to turn up Coleman and maybe Nobel or Rinnai. There are a lot of Coleman fanatics there so prices tend to be high especially if the lamp is red. ::Neil::
@Mackburner Red is considered lucky in China but I didn’t know it was a special colour in Japan too. Regards Jeremy
I have an Rinnai lantern somewhere in my shed. If I remember correctly, I had a hellva time with the pump. I believe it has a red top and a green tank. I believe they were available through some kind of promotion gimmick or something like that. Thinking about it, I believe there was a Japanese fellow who had a really nice website some years back and I think I saw the Rinnai lantern there. I think his site is still there but can't get ahold of him.
Probably Shinzo Kono (?) I used to chat with him from time to time but haven't heard from him for years now. His site hasn't been updated for years either. I'm sure someone wrote here about a Japanese WW2 lantern found in a cave somewhere in the Far East many years after the war ended. Anyone else remember that?
I remember the lantern. It was Japanese found by US troops in a cave on Saipan. It was sent to Coleman for evaluation. I think it burned alcohol. Weak cp output.
I seem to recall several years ago some photos of a huge Lamp museum that I think was in Japan. Can anyone else find it ?
@BigStevie There are no companies still making pressure lantern in Japan. The Japanese “Winged Wheels” that’s Feuerhand type lantern maker. https://www.flamesense.com/product-1
Yosh I didn’t know about that place when I was in Kobe. Next time I’m there, I will have to visit. Tony @YOSH
Thanks Yosh that is an interesting site, but not the one I had in mind it was a very large building (size of a multi court basketball facility (not as rectangular )) had a ceiling covered wit lamps and even a canoe or 2
I believe the museum you are thinking of is in Thailand. I can't find a link right now, but it shouldn't be too hard.
I Think you are referring to this museum Yusuksuwan Museum This link did not work for me, but I am including it, hoping someone has better luck than me. www.yusuksuwanmuseum.com also found the link on this site Yusuksuwan museum Enjoy
