The threads in the air inlet are for screwing up into rather than down into. The threads don't come all the way through. Your iron is complete.

Is this with the wick wet or dry? If it is dry then often fueling the heater and letting it sit for a while can loosen the wick. Here is a list...

I don't know. Copper it seems was always painted in gold paint probably to disguise the copper.
