Over summer i spent time at a number of quiet locations, old canvas and wood bed, canvas tent, a vapalux lamp, the outside world seems to be a far away thing for many as winter encroaches, a few weeks ago bright and warm, now darker colder and raining, using old equipment on a regular basis brings joy and knowing any problems are usually easilly remedied is a bonus. Preferring rural sites away from the major tourist places, its an opportunity to meet interesting people, and get time away. Camping doesnt have to be in a small plastic tent, somedays i ponder if all the old material such as the 1916 camping and woodcraft book and years of old tech has left me with a different view of going camping, not the pop down to the shop buy a cheap pop up tent and a cold thin sleeping bag, but to go somewhere quiet and actually relax. The modern world is instantaneous net centric, disposable, cheap, plastic, the lost gleam of brass, smell of canvas and paraffin, comfort of a waist high bed and warmth of wool blankets, the sounds of the world rather than the music channel. Perhaps it is age that seeks quiet and sees more in an evening sky than on a screen. Heres some encouragement to wander with old lamps and kit and explore. Go out and explore the quiet places.
