The past few times I've litted my TL106 I get a flare up when opening the control cock after pre-heating.
(That's with the pre-heater torch still in place.)
There's no problem at all if I use a long BBQ lighter and light it with that though, could there be another problem.? :-k

When it's cold I use two torches to preheat a Tilley and it's important to clean the pricker wire which is inside the vapouriser, carbon builds up on it and I use a pocket knife to scrape the wire clean, but I do not scrape the point of the pricker wire because those are easily broken.

Right, the temperature wasn't a problem, so I'll give the pricker wire a clean to see if that makes a difference.

I always preheat with no pressure in the tank and the control cock in the open position and before the flame dies down I slowly pump pressure In to the tank until the mantle pops into life and when I'm sure all is ok I gradually pump up to full pressure. I use this method on all my kerosene lanterns .

    That's a method I'll try.

Well, I've just cleaned the pricker wire with a bit of scotchbrite and successfully put the burner back on without making a hole in the mantle, and no flare up.! :D/
