Hi just out of interest, I have a X246 Guardsman probably 1949-54. I believe it’s speculum plated. It has been polished up with Autosol after a little wipe with vinegar and foil. A lot better than it looked but still not clear. My thoughts probably too far gone (not that it matters for age) but does anyone have any ideas on improving the shine further and obviously the light rust spots. Thank you Rob
Where the speculum plating has eroded or corroded, the best you can do for shine is to polish by buffing after the corrosion is gone. I use Autosol, sometimes followed by Mothers Mag. Tony
Thanks Tony, It’s actually appears worse close up, tried autosol. Think I will just leave now. Do you apply anything like a lacquer?
If you apply lacquer make sure it’s fuel proof and you can cure it properly (not high temperature curing). The alternative is to use a soft beeswax polish over the top of your Autosol polish, which you will need to revive every few years. Tony
I’ve 2 speculum lamps to clean , but this is my 246A , I stripped the paint and hand polished with Autosol, not sealed , and used as is
Looks very smart Beanie. I am thinking I may just leave as it is and get it working. It’s a full lamp obviously loved in the past picked up for £15 so can’t complain ! Just currently working on the cage which is quite rusty.
