Hi guys, after posts a few weeks back I had a few comments saying that my frankenstwin lamp seemed to resemble a TL120A. Given that it does seem pretty close and I have gone to the effort of making a pleated shade (which i posted about seperately) I decided to pick up a steel gallery for it. So it's still a frankenstein but pretty much a TL120A now. My current issue is that just going to put it together and assumed it would be a standard onion globe. I have a repro from Julian Shaw (eBay juiliands) but it seems to be far too small for the gallery. With the screw all the way in it is still able to fall out as if it should be maybe 5 - 10mm greater in diameter! If anyone has any catalogue/parts listing's for the TL120A could you confirm they used the same globe? Conversely has anyone had issues with the juilands sizing? Unfortunately I don't have an original to compare. Also if anyone is able to confirm the parts setup for one of these that would be appreciated, I'm not exactly a purist but would like things to be as period correct as possible. I currently have the late X246B tank (with an aluminium disc to replicate the TL shape), the Juiands stem (which from pictures may need to be shortened to match) plus an original TL120A control cock, vapouriser, burner and gallery. Sorry for the very long post!
hi @Sploosh33 a tilley globe should be around the 85 mm diameter at the fitting what does your juliands globe measure? regards pb
Hmm ok what about the gallery? it should be 95 I/D ? edit ** i found the gallery screw and decided to check mine.. it only just fits… But ! … the good folk at base camp do a replacement screw which is longer??
The width of the rims of Tilley 182 globes does vary, for example, I have one old globe which can only be used on a PL-53 because it's held in place by the wire cage.
I would say mine is about 96/96mm. Interesting that there are different screw lengths. Will check that out, mine is brass but appears to be about the same as the shorter of your two. Thank you for taking the time to help out!
Also interesting that there was obviously an earlier TL120A with the older type gallery, I had asked they went to steel when the "A" was added!
Jeff is right, i checked some other globes and they were all slightly bigger but all different.. up to 98mm ?
@Sploosh33 The lower insect screen is upside down. If the lamp is fitted with a 606 vapouriser (standard on a 120A) there isn't enough room between the bottom of the glass and the screen to get the meths torch on.
Interesting! I may have to try and find a dealer who is happy to measure globes before selling them! It seems Tilley got looser and looser with their tolerances as time went on....
Thank you for that tip! Interestingly with this globe it did go on (indicating it is likely smaller.in all dimensions) but I can see that it would be easier the other way up!
Oh that looks great Moncrieff also sell globes but i haven’t haven’t asked them for the gallery fitting there are other globes available that might suit this gallery?
Note: Don’t hold the glass tight with the screws; that will result in the glass cracking when it gets hot. Tony
I've now settled to make a small rounded 4BA extension nut to fit the original screw, will try and take a picture tomorrow. I do need to find another globe anyway though, so if anyone has one they wish to sell that is larger at the top I would be very interested!
