Bought these two 300X lamps a while ago, but only just got them picked up. One appears lightly used, the other with the missing globe showing signs of heavier use. The complete lamp has a Bialaddin globe. Any idea as to age? Stevie
Mid to late 1940s possibly but other learned members on here may be able to narrow it down a bit closer, hope this helps Regards Ian.
Bit later than that. Late 40s early 1950s. Say about 1947/8 to about 1952 ish. These have been known to have stress cracked founts so give them a careful inspection. ::Neil::
It doesn't show too well on your photograph, but these should have maroon tanks - which clashes horribly (but it might be my eyes!) with the red hoods. Here's my pretty mint example:- 1946-51 Bialaddin 300X
You’re right David. Both have original maroon paint with near cherry red tops. They weren’t colour coordinating in sunny Halifax, that’s for sure! The top on the complete lamp is in very good order. I’ll keep this lamp as is and perhaps repaint the other lamp. The general engineering of the Bialaddin looks to be a fair bit better than the Tilleys (hope that isn’t too provocative!).
Nope, not provocative at all - that's the conventional wisdom around here. My theory of it is that Tilley mainly catered for the domestic market and price was therefore an issue. The result was that after about 1956, Tilley quality generally deteriorated progressively i.e. no corner left uncut, to keep the cost down to what Joe Public was prepared to shell out in a declining market. On the other hand, W&B / Bairstow Bros. catered mainly for the military market where cost seemed less of an issue (being borne by the British taxpayer) and quality and reliability were key factors. That's wot I finks anyway...
You got some good ones there. I too reckon the Bialaddins are built better than the Tilleys, especially the later Tilleys. Of course, after fettling we are gunna need pictures of the money shot. Cheers mate Pete
I’ve no excuse Pete as I’ve Bialaddin washers and seals here. Give me 48 hours... hang on, I’ve only got Tilley mantles! Better get on flea bay.
