Your position sounds positively idyllic. Cavan is probably one of the counties of which I am least familiar, but during one of my many sojourns along the Shannon Erne waterway I have great memories of the Angler's Arms in Ballyconnell and a barely remembered session in Carthy's Bar in Leitrim village with a group of Dublin firemen out on a weekend spree in a narrowboat owned by the father of one of them. My wife and I were invited on board at four in the afternoon and finally "escaped" at three in the morning not feeling too well! The crazy thing is that we heard their boat leave their moorings at 8am that same morning. My respect for the constitution of Dublin firemen knows no bounds.

We have visited Cork several times, but why does it always rain when we are there? On one occasion we visited the Murphy's Brewery for the free tour, mainly because it gave us shelter from the storm. The gentleman who met us said he couldn't take us into the brewery proper as there was building work in progress but he showed the audience (all four of us) a video and then invited us to pull our own pints. This was repeated, but then he said he had to leave for a pre-arranged appointment but said we could stay as long as we liked and practice our pint pulling. Of course we felt obliged to do so. Strangely I don't remember much of our subsequent visit to the English market!

Our memories aren't always clouded by alcohol, but the sense of welcome has been a constant.

Incidentally, we also keep a few chickens and have toyed with the idea of goats, but in my advancing years I reckon I will settle for eggs.

    @Fiona Farrell

Sorry for the confusion, when I said "immediately below "pump check valve . . the "foot valve" , I meant the images on this web page Restoration of a PETROMAX 829 Lantern To be honest, there is a better webpage than this but I can't find it. Does anyone else know of it ?

But yes, you will need to remove the entire vapouriser.
Yes, The Fettlebox is our sponser, just click on the link towards the top right of this page (or the highlighted links in my previous post). Don't be put off at the mention of stoves, a lot of the seals are the same as for lanterns. Also, some of the seals may look a bit 'brassy', I can assure you they are not metallic, it's a colour thing. One seal you can't get is #193 vapouiser valve washer, you'll have to get that here Petromax Spares Price List
While there, you may find #119 key for cleaning needle is a useful thing to have - it makes removal of and refitting the cleaning needle so much easier and there's less chance of damaging the needle.

You are so kind and helpful Henry thank you so much.
Sending much heartfelt gratitude and blessings.
What was the full name of that abbreviation you said to put on the threads?
I might get some help from my brother but I am best to learn how to do it myself.
I have Bommels notes printed off from Pelam.de forum but hope I have the pages in the right order.I am low on tools and not experienced with names of parts and what tools to use.But I managed to disassemble the HK 500 lamp, but haven't put the vapouriser with control knob and needle back together.Maybe I will put it in water and also check the foot valve of this HK500 lamp also..bit by bit..I am trying to live without electricity..
    Hugs,
    Fiona

Polytetraflouroethylene tape as used by plumbers, gas fitters and some lamp fettlers. It comes in different grades which are usually distinguished by the colour of the reel it's on. If you choose to use P.T.F.E. tape, Yellow is best. This may explain it better
    Thread seal tape - Wikipedia

As with any new venture, there's a learning curve, we've all been there at sometime in our life and some of us are still learning.

For the tools, have another look at Petromax Spares Price List
about half way down the page is #66 spanner/gauge. D measures the 'air gap' i.e. distance between the jet #50 (a.k.a. nipple / gas tip) and the mixing tube (a.k.a. J tube). If the air gap is not set correctly, the lamp will not work at maximum efficiency.
The notch in the screwdriver blade makes it easy to undo the nut #112 which holds on the control wheel #111.
10 mm fits #107, 15 mm for vapouriser lower part #153, 14 mm for upper vapouriser #152 and 9 mm for the jet.

It's a useful tool but it does have its limitations, especially the 14 and 15 mm sizes so it's best to get proper spanners in these sizes. Personally, I also find a 19mm spanner very usefull for holding the nut that's soldered to the tank where the vapouriser screws in - very handy when removing the vapouriser, especially when it's very tight.

So besides the idyllic place you live in and range you have: what is the main problem now?
I see a working Petromax and Tilley in one of the first pictures.

Maybe it is a good idea to start with one lantern and then go to the next one.

I like to help but it is hard to find the issues between the chitchat.
Although I like chit chat too.

Best advice now is to learn about the part names from the parts list, so we write about the same parts.

Sorry, I had no intention of hijacking the thread. I am finding it most edifying myself.

You are a star Henry.Very busy with my farm and Christmas prep but hope to order some valves and tools and try to fix the leaking foot valve and NRV on probably all my Petromax lamps.
At least my Tilley lamp is working well.
    Thanks so much,
    Fiona

@Henry Plews : but a real set of tools would work better.
These universal lantern things are nice to collect but don't work.

@Fiona Farrell : pm me and I send you one.

More chit-chat, Wim, so you can ignore this post...

Cork is a place I intend to get to one of these days - if for no other reason to visit the grave of one of the finest guitarists who ever was - and a nice guy, too...

    One for you, Jeff.

Ok .. you must live out in the country and need lighting to back up any electricity supplies. The old German Petromax lamps used lead seals before the modern viton substance which is available today.. and I have made lead seals easily from this roofing lead which you can cut out and hole with a drill and scissors.. of course use a template to size and measure them for use .. in an emergency they work just fine ... plenty of thin lead about.
.. taking a full vapouriser rod out of a lamp is tricky and the seal could be damaged doing it ... just a thought.

    Thank you Albert.
With the help of Colin Geer,I got my petromax lamps going and my Tilley lamps but it was difficult just doing a whatsapp video.
So I posted 3 lamps to Mike in basecamp in England.
They have been serviced and hopefully will come in the post soon.
I hope you are lighting your lamps this time of the year.
    Kind regards from Cavan,Ireland.
    Fiona
