Hi fellas, I saw on Facebook Tilley page a what they called a TL5 it looked like a common TL but it had the pump on one side and an air / pressure release on the other, I looked in the gallery but could not see one
Darryl A TL5 is an early 1920s Tilley Table Lamp. It was replaced by the TL10. A Tilley TL5 would be an uncommon beast. Tony
I've got a PL53 fitted with a pressure release. It is also on the other side to the pump so it sounds like the same sort of tank as Darryl reports. I don't think they're all that common but clearly do exist. I've a feeling I posted a pic of that one in the gallery because someone said it was a home-made bodge - which it definitely isn't... Note also the brass knob which is quite unusual. And, no, before someone says it - it isn't the remains of the barrel-shaped knob with the black plastic broken off...
@Tony Press , @David Shouksmith , thank you for the insight to a rare, uncommon Tilley, something to keep an eye out for Thanks fellas
@Darryl Durdin , could you post a picture of what you found please. Some thing is not lining up here. Was it this, almost this or not this ??
@David Shouksmith , very interesting lamp. I wonder if they oversized the hole for the pressure pip then plugged it with an EX4 air release.
A lot of money but I don't think I could have let that go. Often surprises me how some models seem to be so rare to non-existent, with a little prodding do show up.
@Anthony , it looked exactly like that, I saw the enlarged air release that caught my eye, I’m not sure on if I can get the picture from Facebook page,
That is not an air release it's the fuel control valve. Looks like this and the next image shows the fuel tubes. ::Neil.
Yeah and who knows one may turn up. I wouldn't hold your breath though. I've been looking over 50 years and still waiting. ::Neil::
Thanks for showing that Darryl. That is a bit strange. As I said before, some thing is not lining up here. Best patina I have seen for a long time.
Not to worry, Anthony - a quick dip in toilet cleaner will soon put paid to that and a few minutes at the polishing wheel will have it ready for the mantelpiece in next to no time... Whatever it is, it looks to have been like that for a very long time...
@David Shouksmith , Nooooooooooo I would not like to say if this is a real Tilley or not. Could have been a special order. .... however. What I can see is. A fuel control ( I'm sure I've seen them called a carburettor as well) shown in the 1925 catalogue but not the 1927 catalogue. An EX4 version 1 control cock from 1932 to 1936. Cage nuts from V2 EX4. A convex pump knob usually from war time EX100 or PL. There is a story behind this one. To add, the tank may be an EX4 (ver1 or 2) but the control cock would have been desoldered and replaced with a bit of a turn. A look at the solder underneath would answer a few questions. Whatever is or isn't, still a very nice looking lamp.
