Here is my X410A Ive had sitting around for a while, have given a cleanup and fired up for the first time. This one appears to be made in September 1962 I'm not mistaken.
Yes it appears so after measuring it. Kind of a mystery why it had been changed, as this lamp appears to have had little use.
Looks fantastic mate, congratulations, maybe one day I might be lucky enough to add one to my collection.
Wow, New in Box. It looks unfired, I'd be tempted to keep it that but if you do decide to light it, the insect screen is upside down which will make it difficult to fit the alcohol torch.
To be honest I have no inspected the lamp yet, has a chip in the enameled hood and this is how I bought it from a fellow collector over CCF

I always thought that was the correct orientation for them! Going by the photo gallery, I see many fitted in both orientations and I always assumed the lip around the edge was designed to slide over the rim of the glass? Also with the larger clip on variety, do these sit below the glass or drop down from the top and sit inside the glass?

Here is how the pump looks when removed, see the gap between the thumbscrew ring? It will screw down when I tighten it and the gap moves. I dont see anything that seals this part, except for the thread itself. I'm not sure why this ring moves up and down on the inside thread, I never thought it was a separate part, so am a bit surprised. This is where the air is leaking out from. Well that should put that to rest. I might need to pinch one off another lamp. Judging by this, the insect screens for all tilley lamps should sit below the glass?
Because literally every tilley lantern I've bought has them that way, also gives more room for the preheater to clip on. Obviously that's not an indicator, but its all I've had to go by, haven't really paid much attention on photos online until recently. I also find they have the habit of slipping down all by their own if I kept it below the glass.
Fair comment, it's a pity the instructions (with pictures) haven't lasted as long as the lanterns. Wiser after the event I know but as can be seen in the image posted by @Tony Press, the insect screen should be mounted curved downwards and I've found this gives adequate room - even on an X246B with 606 vapouriser - for the preheater. Although I haven't had any bother with either this type or the older, larger clip-on variety, I can only assume the spring designed to hold the screen firmly on the vapouriser has lost its strength.
Yes, none of my boxed ones have the instructions inside anymore either. I've also just noticed that the glass on the lantern I'm looking at has a much deeper bottom compared to the rest of mine which takes up far more space to attach the preheater. I'm guessing that Tilley must have changed the design because of this. If you are not sure what I mean, I'll photograph it. Yes i think the springs loose their strength over time and with heating and cooling cycles it's probably enough for it to creep down.
Yes, I've noticed this anomaly but I wouldn't have said "much" on the examples I've seen. Still, when there's not a lot of room to start with, even a little seems a lot.
This one is quite noticeable, I see its got a crack starting on it anyway, so I will probably throw it out. I Have to slide the preheater up on an angle to get it on, quite fiddly and this is the more modern one which is slimmer, the older asbestos type is quite a bit more deeper and Im not sure how one of those would fit on. I will get a photo later so you can see.
