It’s been a wee while since I’ve been here but my dad came over tonight with his TL10 as it needed a little fettle. So I got that going and then he presented me with the R1 radiator he found in the barn. Rather than test a potentially dirty tank with foul smelling paraffin, I transferred the pump, burner assembly and vaporiser over to the lamp. Looks like it’s all good. There are a couple of black spots on the stainless mantle so maybe it could do with a new one. I’m not very clued up on heater burners. Other than that delighted. Just need to get a guard for it and a wee bit of spit and polish.
Yes, Jeff - the black spots will eventually burn away. I'm always surprised how long it takes given it's only a bit of carbon that needs to be burned off and the temperatures around there. So I imagine it's more to do with a lack of oxygen - it must be pretty anoxic on the surface of the mantle...
Not so long ago, “Juliands “ from the bay of evil was selling stainless steel reproduction guards. I was able to get one and they’re pretty good. Cheers Pete
So I got the heater going with no problems. The tank seemed surprisingly clean. I’m missing one of the nuts that fix the reflector to the handle. It’s the same nut as you find on a lamp gallery ”spring pin” but I’m sure one will turn up eventually. I’ve just ordered some new seals as the gland seal is leaking on the heaters valve and the valve rubber on the lamp has disintegrated after only a year...
