Today I found one of those old-fashioned hardware stores that sell anything from a radiator bleed key to a paint kettle. It's near Sidcup in Kent. I asked after any old Tilley spares. The elderly prop. took me to the back of the store where he had a few Aladdin wicks. No pressure lamp stuff. I asked after paraffin, did he sell it "draught". No, but he had a beautiful tank out the back, he used to sell a lot of paraffin locally but now it was just the occasional drop for greenhouse heaters. He couldn't justify all the paperwork to resurrect the tank...and demand was so slow. So, I bought 4 litres in a plastic container for £9.95, I felt a bit sorry for him. There was a sleepy looking petrol station across the way. I went in and asked if they sold paraffin.Yes, it's over there, £6.95 for 4 litres in a plastic container. The same stuff, same container, same supplier - and three quid cheaper.... You pays your money...
£6.95 is pretty darn good. Most petrol stations charge around a tenner. I'd clean 'em out if I were you!
I found a petrol station on the north side of Norwich that sells paraffin for less than £1.00 a litre from a petrol pump, but you do have to supply your own container to take it away.
Do a google search in your area for 'heating oil suppliers' these are commercial bulk suppliers that will often sell to the public if you turn up to their depot with a suitable container. Ours 'Northern Oils' Nottingham, has a minimum sale of 20 litres but that's fine given a price of 70p a litre. I've been using their Texaco Kerosene for over 2 years, burns nice and bright, no difference to pre-pack, slightly stronger odour when decanting but exactly the same when burning.
In Belgium they sell paraffin oil /kerosene from the pump/drought for 0.85€ /L Went there a month ago with jerry cans and bought 30L at once.
DP2 .. and lampies in the North West , Caldo oils now no longer been bought out by Aztec oil and they are running site down ...end of an era Staff given redundancy notice and 1 bloke left .. said site will be history in March and close sine die forever ... cross off your list ... maybe you know oil depots any Lancashire/ Manchester way ?
@ColinG There are twenty litre containers of ‘kerosene’ at Skiach services on the A9 north Of Inverness. I asked the guy if it was paraffin for heaters, he said yes. It’s at £19.95.
Gordale nurseries on the Wirral used to sell paraffin @ £6 per 4ltr container... I may pop over this weekend...
Lampies in the North .. wha / haey Garage in Wrexham selling paraffin/ kero from the pump forecourt .. Smithy View , Chester Road LL12 as per web info and tp call this afternoon it is a bit out of the way for me to go , but as supplies run out got to be ok
Yes I got news of caldo closing a couple of weeks ago, will try to stock up before they close completely.
Regarding the Caldo site in St Helens that is definitely going which is the main office .. they have depots in other places ... The company has been sold I do not know about the depots. ????? Aztec Oils are the owners ... I am not on the " Need to know list " just a customer like anyone else .. Good news ... Mike from CONNOLLY OILS, Halton , Runcorn will sell you 28 second kero/ heating oil , bring your own container to 3 Jensen Court , Halton ,RUNCORN .Cheshire WA7 1SQ. ring up first I feel he is really busy ......It is an awkward place to find ,now , New Mersey Gateway toll bridge £2 each way for me , or M6/ M56 turn off North to NE Runcorn Astmoor Industrial estate
Hi Jeremy. Don't know the name of the filling station but it is on the b1150 north walsham road , if you are heading into Norwich it's the first petrol station on the right hand side after you have entered the built up area ,the paraffin pump is right next to the office , price is still less than 1 pound per litre, Hope this helps, Regards Ian.
If you're in Sussex, Clay Hill petrol station, north of Lewes has just be demolished and re built.... happy to say they are still doing Kerosene on the pump If you forget your container they have drums ready 12lts for £20, couldn't see the pump price.
If you do a google search for “kerosene pump near me” it will give a google map link which allows you to click on the map to show sites in that area. You might be surprised how many there are; loads of them in Leeds. Of course I have yet to try any but no reason why they shouldn’t deliver. Crown Oils in Bury is listed but not the Norwich one but there are at least 7 sites shown in Norwich one being right in the centre! (Watson Fuels who list kerosene on their website).
Hi Rolf .. that is a really great tip given by you ..I have checked quite a few that shew on'th tinternet.. that are kerosene suppliers but you will find that many are not and have not been recently updated especially the ESSO and TEXACO chains ... if you are feeling lucky one has to contact by phone and ask . Oil deliverers for home heating oil are the best bet ... but many are really not interested in little fish like us 500 litres minimum sometimes 200 litres ... only a few will entertain you with your empty drum of 20 ltrs or so .. They may have prepacked drums... seen that but nearly twice the price ... current price at my local through the pump kero 20 ltrs £15.20.... 20 ltrs prepacked kero their plastic drum £28.00 ... Find a friend relative with oil central heating !
To all and DP2... had an email from "Crown Oils " in Bury ... Annabel says on taking your own container for a fill of fuel .. This is something you can do it you come down to our yard in Bury BL9 7HY, however, we wouldn't deliver this quantity. So Crown oil at Bury it is ..
Just spoke with staff at " Connolly Oils " , 3 Jenson Court , Astmoor Industrial estate, Halton , RUNCORN, Cheshire WA7 1 SQ ... take your own container they will fill it up as required... anytime between 9 - 5 .. 28 second kero is around 65 pence per litre they have 20 litre pre packed kero too, a tad more expensive, they sell red diesel too ... could not be more helpful ...!!! Place is really easy to find off the Daresbury expressway ... unfortunately the Mersey Gateway bridge is tolled ... not though if you come off the M56 J 11 Preston Brook interchange , and use Chester Road to Daresbury expressway ... pick up Runcorn centre signs and Astmoor Industrial estate,,, easy .
Attended " RIBBLE FUEL OILS " , Bamber Bridge , Walton Summit, Lancashire .. PR5 8AN ... purchased kerosene at 79p per litre .. The staff could not have been more helpfull , really east to find J 29 M6 , M65 junction ,, easy to find. off A6 on Industrial estate .. It is bank / credit card only sales though .. no cash , draw up... bring your own container . Fill away as much as from pump .. Kero only, other fuels are ,Gas oil/ Derv etc avaible ..no paraffin there .. another one
I still have to check this out but just North of Oban airport in the highlands there is a sign for diesel, petrol and kero. I think it's on or part of a permanent travellers site which would make sense as I imagine kero fuelled devices would be useful in the circumstance. If anyone is close you could go have a look. I probably won't be going that way for the foreseeable future!!!
