Jon How do you get the brass so clean without hours off buffing, I currently have a top soaking in Pepsi to try and remove some of the crud first.
@Gary Waller I have a bench grinder, I use a sisal wheel with a polishing soap to cut through the crud to start with, then various different mops and polishing soaps after to polish it up. It’s an identical process to polishing motorcycle engine casings which I’ve been doing for years.

I have a bath of vinegar that I soak stubborn brass parts in. It's best not to leave it in too long but it gets through the baked on crud pretty efficiently. When it's mostly clean (I use fine wire wool) I polish it on my buffing wheel.
