I bought this lantern from a service man who said it was his grandfathers, so I thought I would restore it to its former glory. I had not come across a 1A Aladdin with a hood. very cool I set about stripping down and cleaning up parts I have up graded the jet and needle, I replaced the old original with a Radius 119 jet and needle I bought from Korea . a fine bit of machining , I also cut a new thread in the top of the generator to suit the new jet, the threads are similar but I could not screw the new jet into the old generator all the way I cleaned and shined everything its looking good, I etched primed the tank and hood, spray painted them as close to olive drab as possible its all coming together the finished lantern I hope you all enjoy , as much as I do.
Darryl Try a magnet... it could be “coppered” steel (I’ve seen a few of these recently for Kayen). Tony
@Darryl Durdin Darryl, TW Sands in Melbourne sell replacement jet and needle for the Aladdin 1A which are the correct thread and length (119 needles are shorter than Aladdin). Kerosene Lighting Melbourne – T W Sands & Co
Ive ordered some from them before end of last year and still waiting, i ordered some other bits and still waiting.ive basically given up on them, i had ordered parts before and they came through. Since them mo ing ive had nothing.
Good work Darryl, it's looking good. I have one of these to build and your pictures will be a handy reference. James
That is on hell of a fine job you did Darryl. It is interesting, the two differing colours that are are given in the photos. The green colour in the photo of the complete lamp looks much lighter than the incomplete lamp. This is exactly why ebay sellers mention the colours of their products may look different in real life compared to the photos. Darryl, I think the hood needs to be popped back out where the hood nut has been screwed on too tightly and pushed the top of the hood down. Just a minor detail you may or may not have overlooked. I've used the rounded end of a screw driver handle to gently push this type of thing back into shape.
can i completely disassemble this, including the cam? It seems like the 3/8 nut won't come out any more than a fixed amount!
@Damien The packing nut can come off the shaft, but I kept it there to preserve the graphite packing. On this forum you don’t need to ask the same question indifferent places. Cheers Tony
Thanks for the tip Tony. I'm slowly getting a handle on this forum... no doubt you generous members wish I hadn't found it.
so here's the Preston ring so far... 6 hours later ... haven't managed to get anything into the ring itself yet. BTW Tony, just viewing your photo above, I noticed you've got the smaller nut off the shaft... is that a delicate job, because that particular nut seems glued to the shaft.
I've tried cleaning the Preston loop manually and although it is possible it's not easy! You could try the heat/quench cycle on it, that uaualy works... at least it does wirh vaporisers.
Cheers Tony and Colin. What do actually quench it in? I've seen a Tilley guru on YouTube talk about quenching in oil??
Thanks Tony. Ended up with soft jaws -made from some scrap aluminium channel -and I upended the thing and turned the fount... hey presto! Now for cleaning the inner tube, as in the centre tube that has a tiny brass gauze on top... vinegar maybe?
Just quench it in water. I believe it's the thermal shock and the differential expansion/contraction that dislodges the build up. I've tried it with Tilley and Bialaddin vaporisers and also a Primus 96 lipstick jet and it works a treat. Whatever you're cleaning you'll need to knock the debris out and repeat quite a few times until the amount of stuff coming out reduces.
