    Another lantern cobbled together by London Transport from mainly Tilley X246B parts

    Yes, that seems to have been a fairly common railway in-service modification - an aluminium can strapped to the back of the frame using a Jubilee clip. I've seen it on a number of occasions on a range of lamps. Given that they would be used over a large area, it makes sense to have a self-contained lighting unit.

    It would be nice to see some images of your lamp as well... :D

    Looking at my images again, maybe that was slightly harsh. The part making up the heatshield, handle and back-stay has taken a bit of work to complete and then it's been, I think, PVC coated to give a measure of heat insulation for the operator's hand. I wonder if LT contracted that out..?

    This lamp is actualy not such a daft design. LT1 is a really rough looking beast but these are an engineering improvement on that. Strange looking perhaps but the integrety of the lamp is not compromised and they do the job quite well. I Have had mine running and it performs well. ::Neil::

    I have just realised this one is a later one than mine. Do you have a date stamp in the base for this. With that tank and globe cage it should be about 1978 to 1981 ish. ::Neil::

    Ah, now this one, I have no idea of it's current location. It was in the lounge until very recently but then I tidied that up and I can't remember where I put the lamp. Maybe the dining room - who knows...

    It's a bu&&er, isn't it. ](*,)

    I know the problem. Took me three years once to find one lamp I wanted to look at here. ::Neil::

    One to add to the list of dated Tilley stuff I have. Interesting because it pre dates the LT1s I have dates for. ::Neil::

    It's stamped 278, Neil.

    Just had it running for what can only be the first time in my ownership. The original mantle must have survived the postal system and the lantern itself needed nothing more than a tiny nip-up of the vapouriser to cure a slight weep from the seal.

    I know I've done nothing to this lantern because the globe is filthy inside and I'm still trying to figure out how to get the top off so I can clean it. Looks like the whole b****y thing has to come apart! ](*,)
