My 2 Tilley lamps an SL61 and a X246 both have an 1/2" thread on the control cock and the tank, one is brass the other is alloy. I have a spare brass control cock and 5" vaporiser with a 3/4" thread. what lamp does this fit?
Hi John, It sounds like it's off an earlier X246 'Guardsman' p.s. does your X246 have a date stamp on the base plate? (underneath)
This picture shows the two control cocks in lamps are 1/2" thread and the spare one is 3/4" thread. Its stuff I inherited 1n 1991 when the father-in-law passed on. just wondering what this spare control cock was from?
@Tony Press The burner appears to have the three screw on gallery bushes, rather than the single collar and split pin.
Not necessarily, Depends on the date. This catalogue lists that burner with the 3 screwed bushes in the X246B https://classicpressurelamps.com/threads/tilley-x246b-parts.786/ And I have one dated February 1966
Well spotted, @ROBBO55 I think I have a few variations of the latest styles of Tilley burners (ones without the locking nuts). Tony
Hi @John Sayer Thanks for the photos of your lamps Looks like you have been doing some work on them too!
@ROBBO55 @Tony Press interesting. I’d based my comment on the evidence that my rag tag collection of X246B lamps all have the single collar and split pin type burner. It’ll make me look closer at old X246B lamps now!
I bought this X246 a long while ago for spares from a car boot sale very cheap. It looked like scrap, sorry no pictures. My Velux and my s61 hospital lamp kept going so its been hung in my garage for maybe 20 years until lockdown. Got a new glass, a service kit, stripped it down, the red is a Vauxhall car colour, the frame/cage high heat engine paint Last night I fired it up for the first time. A bit of coughing and spluttering at first, a few pop pops then it I left it running for 3 hours. I am pleased with the result .
That's an X246B, John, not an X246 - although it is fitted with a deep-dish X246 globe which you need to look after. Well done getting it going. Velux / Vapalux? - predictive text strikes again...
Velux, I think they are windows, hmm. Thanks for the info. on my lamps. i am finally fining out what i've had in the garage all those years. I wish I had found this forum before I started fettling.
