I know what he means, it looks just the NRV in the pump but fits in the bottom of the control cock. In fact, I think the part number is the same.

@Steve Broughton The NRV (non return valve) in the control cock shuts off the fuel flow to the vapouriser. Have a look at this drawing courtesy of base-camp.co.uk

Aha! remembered I had one of those mini rechargeable gas soldering torches from Aldi, heated it up and unscrewed it.

Right 2 steps forwards one back etc. The cock is completely knackered, where the housing attaches into it for the rod of the control knob the threads have gone and you can't tighten it back up, the valve is missing as is the spring, also how much of the pricker protrudes out the end when you push it in? I've pushed it down on the bench and you can barely feel anything on the top just about scratches my fingertip, that's not right is it? :(

Dave I dunno what they are made of they look like metal to me? Remember this is the first time in my life I've had me of these things, I'm a signwriter if I stuck a gilders tip in your hand would you know what it's for or how to use it?

Yes, possibly, but I lived next door to a signwriter for many years. :)

The seals may look like metal but that's just a reflection. They're actually black Viton rubber which is the best you can get. Other types of artificial rubber are inferior and won't last anywhere near as long.

You've knackered the Tilley control cock - the bit with the knob attached isn't meant to come out because there's nothing serviceable in there. Maybe you can screw the gland/knob back in and re-solder it - fingers crossed. The vapouriser - the bit you're holding - simply unscrews from the control cock. It should be no more than hand-tight, hence the knurling. In fact, there's little on a Tilley that requires tools to do up or loosen.

If no-one's recommended them so far, find Broadlander's video clips on YouTube. I've not looked at them personally, but those who have recommend them highly as a guide to servicing your Tilley lantern. The same principles will apply broadly to your Bialaddin lantern.

Where, vaguely, is Benington? - it's quite likely there's someone not too far away who may have a spare control cock (I certainly have) and can offer some advice...

Edit: - Four miles east of Stevenage? - sounds dangerously close to Neil McRae (Mackburner), no less!

Actually, that sounds about right:thumbup:...but go steady on the bench push as the tip can bend or break fairly easily as well?

    Good old Aldi!:)

And i would just get another control cock as well, they are not great quality to begin with and are widely available and not too much money : )

If you want a donor aluminum control valve, I have a used spare but you'll need to keep hold of the black plastic knob. Don't want anything for it, I'll just need your address.

Welcome Steve, what’s been said is fine, but personally I’ve never had a problem with Julian’s seals. But yes the fettlebox material is superior

The Vapalux one came apart easy so I'm going to buy a washer kit from on here, where is the best place for a mantle? and there's some sort of pre heater collar on it where do you get them from?

There's always eBay but don't rely on the sellers description, make sure it says either Vapalux or BiAladdin on the packet. You may get away with a Tilley mantle but they are slightly smaller and can be difficult to stretch onto a Vapalux burner. Also, eBay can be a minefield for the inexperienced so try here www.base-camp.co.uk

What is wrong with the existing pre-heater ?

The pre-heater cup is a standard bit of Bialaddin kit and is very useful. Is it stuck on or was it a general question? They should slide on and off the vaporiser and only need to come of for maintenance or replacing a worn vaporiser.

The preheater looks very black and cinder like but having no reference of what they are supposed to look like it may be ok I suppose?

If the pre-heater comes off ok, submerge it in some vinegar. Check it after an hour or so and use some wire wool or a scouring pad on it. You should see the black gunk start to lift off. Depending on what happens it might need another session to get it properly clean.... if that's what you want to achieve.

If you mean the rolled up wick then be careful as the original ones contain asbestos fibres...New kevlar ones are available from Julians for £3.75 for 2...base-camp do them for £2.95 each + P+P... Or you can make one with the stuff from round the door on a wood burner :)

You could try lighting it with the meths to see first? They nearly always still work?

You'll need a bottle with a long spout to fill it tho...base-camp again or you can get cheap syringes with blunt needles on ebay? ..Or rig up a funnel out of something suitable?

The list is endless! ...That's the trouble with a hobby...you start to find all these 'extras' that you never knew you needed...](*,)... :)

Bought 2 from Juliands, as far as hobbies go well 3 bicycles, a motorbike, photography, archery .... the bloke from Hermes has worn a path to my door and my wife's most used phrase is "now what have you bought?"

Might be able to help with a filter bottle, see attached image, bought 3 of these for a fiver from Amazon, use them to clean my airbrushes, yes another hobby. :)

That's what I used until Norman made me the 'S' shaped filler nozzle bottle. Whatever works best really. The 'S' filler gets to the pre-heater cups that are difficult to get to like my Coleman 220 kero conversion.

Continuing the 2 steps forward three back routine, put the Tilley to one side whilst waiting for parts, thought I'd have a go with the Vapalux 320 serviced with new seals etc, new mantle came today, nipped out for a bottle of meths, wife won't let me use her gin, came back sat down to attach the mantle and ......... oh! the mantle support is missing, off we go back to Evilbay more waiting. ](*,):)
