This is a “last resort” repair to a Kayen burner. Well-used Tilley and Kayen burners have the tendency to wear out at the thread joints, particularly at the points where the air tubes and mixing tube meet the main burner body. This old Kayen burner is off a copper Kayen. Most of the burner was fine, except for the air tubes at the burner ends. They were very loose in the burner. The air tubes on this particular Kayen burner are also of thinner brass tubing with a smaller external diameter than standard Tilley air tubes. Here is the Kayen burner next to an old (long) Tilley burner. The Kayen burner is much taller and the burner body is larger than the Tilley. John (@presscall ) sets a very high standard for silbrazing, and it was he who induced me to take up silbrazing for brass stove and lantern repairs. 1. I thoroughly cleaned the parts I was going to silbraze together - the burner threads and immediate surrounds, and the threads on the air tubes - using 30% sulphuric acid, a Dremel wire brush, and steel wool. 2. I set the burner up in a laboratory clamp in a vise on my hot table. 3. I applied plenty of flux. 4. I used a MAPP torch, and, because of the mass of the brass burner I had to apply a lot of heat to the burner before applying the brazing rod. The repair does not have to be too pretty because the burner is hidden in the hood; but the treads must not leak air, and the vapouriser must engage properly with the burner. I am very happy that this historic piece of Australian lamp history is able to use its original (if modified) burner. This should last another 60 years or so! Cheers Tony
