Hello all I just finished this WL 25 I wonder about the age of the lamp. I have read this model have been produced from the 20' to the 60'. I found this picture But nothing matches with mine which is here : any help will be appreciated
It's a splendid lamp! The earliest it can be is 1940, but if there is any Tilley stamping on the tank then it can be dated more accurately.
The control cock is not the original one, your lamp should have a GF., (1940-1962) the same as the one which is shown in the third photo.
Very nice Lamp that, @Michel ..The control cock looks like the ones on the X246a @JEFF JOHNSON ...When do you think the WL was produced up to, Jeff?
I have one dated 362 so March 1962 but they are not listed in the August 1962 price list. That however is the one with a clipped on hanger and foot ring. ::Neil::
@podbros : I searched in the gallery and I must agree, the control cock looks like a X246a same black knob and shape In Jim dick book and in the gallery, I also find the X410 and the X359 which have the same black knob So I guess this lamp to be from circa 1960 (1958/62) @JEFF JOHNSON : you wrote : "The earliest it can be is 1940," could you explain why ?
@Michel ..What Jeff meant was the control cock was not original to your wall lamp? Your lamp differs from those from 1960's, mainly by not having a clipped on hanging ring? You are right that the control cocks do change, but there are also changes to the lamps as the control cocks vary in length and that needs to be incorporated in the lamp housing, as @paul m as just shown? Have a look in the Reference Gallery at the wall lamps, there are subtle differences p.s. it's one of the reasons why dating a lamp by the parts is so difficult..
Thanks you all for the answers I keep still puzzled Yes I noted the control cock is not the good one for the period But as I said this type of control cock was mounted on others Tilley models in the 60' More : the seller told me he have bought this lamp new with this control cock (perhaps a special monting for export to France ?) unfortunately I can't contact him again In fact this is not very important if I don't know the production period, this is a beautifull lamp
Hello Michel, the previous answers to your question are all correct, Tilley stopped using the XN., control cock in 1940 and then started using the GF., control cock which is shorter, so it does not need the deep socket which the XN., control cock needed. Hence the earliest which your lamp can be is 1940.
Does it have a stamped number stamped on the rim of the tank like this? They can be hard to see sometimes.
From October 1956 they had date stamps on the bottom. What I was wondering about is the RD number on the rim.
Hi all : No Tilley label, no stamping anywhere although the french market loves the polished brass, it is possible the fount was gold painted then have been sanded down so the label could have been lost You all speack of 3 control cock types : XN pré 34, XN 35/40 and GF until 1962 But, what about those : (including mine) 1960 1960 TILLEY BR no preheater 1960 1960 Tilley X359 1959 1959 X359 tilley storm lamp 1964 Tilley X246A (1964) 1964 Tilley X246A (Feb 1964) 1962 Tilley X246A (1962) 1966 1966 Tilley X264A
It is a conundrum If you want to send it to me, I will do my best to solve it? It is a real 'looker'... Have you had it lit, at all Michel ?
@Michel ,with the WL25 going to the early 60's (info from Neils PLC) and the X246A having the control cock that you have starting in the late 50's (PLC again) I say that control cock could actually be original and would date your lamp at late 50's to early 60's. Having said that, it should have a date stamp on the bottom.
@podbros yes a real conundrum no I didn't lit it at this day I have too much "irons on the fire", but I will as soon as I have some free time @Anthony I am I'm tempted to think so, and perhaps before october 1956 because there is definitevely no stamping on the bottom
The lack of any stamping narrows the date to 1940 to 1954. That tank profile was used from 1940 to 1954 but they were not stamped. The same profile was reinstated in November 1957 but always with the logo and company name stamped on the tank side. That 1957 to 1960 tank should always be date marked in the base. That leads me to the conclusion that the cock is not original to the lamp because that cock type is from about the early 1960s. ::Neil::
Michel You said your head hurts... Let me try to summarise the discussion. Your wall lamp is from the period 1940 to 1954, but it has a later type of control cock fitted which was manufactured from nearer to 1960 or later. If you want a control cock from the period 1940 to 1954 to replace the one you have I’m sure there is someone nearby who can supply one. Otherwise I can send you one. It is a fine lamp! Tony @Michel
@Tony Press : Don't worry I will survive I am not the man to refuse a gift, it would be very improper for the moment, I will give it a try in this configuration
here is the light the lamp runs very good even if I am not absolutely convinced by the light output I own two shades, a champagne and a white so I prefer the white opal shade
@Michel The first pic looks lovely ...But I'm a bit worried that in the second pic it seems to be brighter on one side than the other??? ....Is the mantle ok?
