Hi, I received this lantern from a fellow Belgium collector. A Uk made Dutch Army lantern. Very similar to Coleman style. But with 350cp a bit brighter than the usual single or doublemantle petrol coleman. Needs pre.heating with alcohol. Needed some minor fettling. The burner grid was missing. But the seller had spares. The needle at the tip of the rod was missing too. I replaced it with a chinese acupuncture needle. Hard solder to the rod. Pump valve was leaking. Needed thorough cleaning. Aftee multiple disassemblies , it now works fine. I decided to keep the rubber seal at the valve. Despite i know this to be a weak point for potential fail if no viton. We,ll see. Lantern is said to be from the 60ties
@bp4willi Well done on Your fettle and she’s looks to be running well. I do like the Veritas lanterns, when fettled they’re proving to be reliable runners. Cheers Pete
Good morning. I am working on a Veritas 350P just now, bought the lamp last week. Brand new as they say, never been lit. Pump is working now after a little oil, cleaning needle ok. But the graphite packing on the valve shaft was more or less gone, like dust. Question is now, how do I replace the packing, I made a picture to explain: From the left, the tip, thread, a bit dark clip, copper ring, gap for the packing and then a copper bush. I do not think I can remove the knob, only way to get a new packing in place is to remove the clip, is that correct? As I speak about clip, is it a sort of spring? Can this be done without damaging the thread? Thanks and have a nice Sunday, Ton.
Yes, you are correct @vissertw . The ring or clip isn't that springy. You can pry it open and re-clamp/reform it back on the stem groove. Everything can be done without damaging the thread if you're careful enough. You can either buy a new graphite packing or have someone to machine it out from solid graphite rod on a lathe. You can check whether its available from Fettlebox, Basecamp or Fogas. The other members here would know better.
Thank you MYN. I will have to pay a vist with some addresses in Holland to look for it. Regards, Ton.
@vissertw When restoring my Veritas 350 P I used the graphite tape from Fettle Box to wrap around the stem where it fits. This works great and no disassembling is necessary. Just the easiest way. Matthias
I would just remove the graphite and re-pack the gland with PTFE gas tape twisted into a string. You can do that without removing the clip and PTFE will compress to seal very well and it will certainly withstand the heat because the gland doesn't get too hot. The bonus is whilst providing a good seal the friction coeficient is low so the control is easier to turn. ::Neil::
