Well today was a day to do some polishing and bringing this BR49 back to its former self, it took me well over 6 hours of hand polishing, well worth the effort as the results will show for themselves. I got this lamp for a very low price as the person didn't know what they had and who am I to argue over the price. Here are the photos that I have taken in the restoration, there is a photo of how I got this BR49 to show how run down she was but now looks wonderful to me and i'm happy to put her in the reference galley where she belongs. Thanks for taking the time and having a look.
Looking great! Got a deep globe Toby the looks of it. Not even going to ask how you got the pre heater so clean...
@BigStevie, why do you think it took me over 6 hours to complete this lamp, this is what I did first step methylated spirits, step 2 Autosol Metal life saver and finally step 3 Autosol Metal polish, as you can see its amazing stuff I wouldn't use anything else, this is how we do our magic when hand polishing. But dont tell anyone oops I already have haha. And there you have it, I remember using it when I was younger then I found it again, it's an amazing product that still hasn't changed to my knowledge, which really isn't that great, that in itself tells you how great it is.
That is one good looking lamp. Well done indeed. I've never heard of Autosol Metal Lifesaver. Is it an esoteric Aussie speciality?
Oh man, will this ever slow down?!! This one is absolutely beautiful!! I have a BR49, it's yellow with the wrong top but it has the heater. Mine, I think, was made for British Southern Rail. Mine would not touch yours... BTW, I bought a "boat" ticket so I'm set, airline tickets, boat tickets, even hotel reservations, too! LOL I'm on my way! Gosh, you are sure lucky!
@R100, @george, @Tony Press, Yes Tony is correct its made in Germany so you should be able to buy it. Sorry george we are in lock down again for at least 5 days, which means you have to quarantine for 14 days, so I would take the boat mate. Thanks for all the comments.
That Autosol did a excellent job. Sparkling. I have used the liquid and paste Autosol with good results.
Nice lamp. Excellent restoration! Would anyone here be able to comment on Autosol’s effectiveness when compared with Mothers? Which is best for our hobby?
@Alex74 You could be asking the question “Which football team is best: Manchester City or MU?”... Cheers Tony
@Alex74, good idea put it in the open forum, as I would be interested in the results. Add votes as well hmm what do you think?
I see. I tried Mother’s on those 427s I recently bought and done up, and must admit, the results are cracking. It even brought back the dullness if the nickel ed pump, which I boiled in citric acid for 30 min! I thought I’d buggered it for good. Nope!
