Can anyone tell me anything about this lamp please?

Firstly, I apologise if there is somewhere else on this forum I should be posting this. I came across this lamp whilst clearing out my late grandparents house, fell in love with it and am going to display it in my home. I’d just really like to know what it is and where it might have been used. I cannot see any markings other than on the glass, the base looks as though it’s been soldered. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

 

Welcome @Daniel McDonald . It is a great example of a Tilley X246. The shape of the tank on this variant gets it the the tag of "pork pie",: X246
The glass globe is more modern but not unusual to find them replaced and the lantern seems to be in fine condition; with some small effort and seal kit you may find it works well:

Definitely a pork pie model as explained by @Fireexit1 above but it does appear to have a 7" vaporiser fitted rather than the standard 5" judging by the gap between the top of the cage and the hood!!

 

Thank you so much, when researching I did find the x246 was the closest resemblance, obviously there were some changes made over the years my grandad owned it. I love the tarnished look of it and don’t think I’d want to polish it up, but I’ll definitely look into getting it working again, thank you.

 

Yes @Keith Warby - I just noticed that on second look. The cage nuts are not done up fully to try and compensate ! A 606 vapouriser is needed.

I understand I need to get a 5” vaporiser, I feel like it’d be a good idea to replace all seals but I’m confused on which to buy, could anyone point me on the right direction please? Thanks

 

Tilley Washer Kit - The Fettlebox

The Tilley 606 5" vapouriser is the most common, but conversely the most sought after. You can buy new ones from Tilley UK but they are not the best quality and are a bit of a lottery. Ebay is one place to look. They were regarded as a "consumable" and second hand ones may be knackered - again a lottery. They choke up with carbon and/or the jet gets enlarged. People manage to break off the pin end of the needle or they occasionally lose the spring. "New old stock" or NOS are the ones to look out for. IF your 7" one is OK somebody here might swap for a 5" one (or you might want to hang onto it as you may end up with a lamp that needs one, one day) Patience is normally rewarded when it comes to looking for them at a reasonable price. On the upside you are unlikley to wear it out yourself so it should be a one-off purchase. And yes do replace the seals. The kit contains all you need including a new pump leather. Fettlebox ones are good. The modern Tilley SP1 washer set will have the wrong seals for the pump and the cock.

Just looked on the Base camp site and they have new stock 606 vapourisers "checked and tested" ??!!!

I may have to check that out myself!

I think yours is the X246 Pork Pie 2nd model, as it has the longer handle.
These X246 pork pies, clean up nicely and do run well which you’ll find out when you get the correct 5” vapouriser for it.
I’m looking forward to the pictures of her when you get her running.

Hi mate welcome its a third version X246 pork pie as the cage (bail) screws to the tank.
The first version does have a shorter handle, but is fixed to the tank (fount), and the second is the same as the first, but the handle is longer.
