@Fireexit1 I think I’m right in saying that the records of Tilley production have never been found, or was it the person who ended up with them wouldn’t pass them on? I recall hearing some information about this. So, I guess the best answer is probably ‘a lot’!
Outstanding and with all the bits and pieces! For a crate that size and with all of those items to stay together for all of these years is remarkable. Bless all of those folks that set something like that aside because you just never know...one day you might... Congrats! Mike.
I see you've followed the example of others when locating the funnel. My box came with the spring clips positioned like this Which allowed funnel and mantle box to be located thus, though I dare say this could be an acceptable alternative.
@Henry Plews Ah, the thick plottens! That makes sense Henry, I’ll be on the lookout for a Tilley mantle box now! I perhaps also added the wrong style of funnel to my box, being a little longer than the more common Tilley funnel, who knows? The funnel clip is most definitely in its original position in my box, that is holding the funnel horizontally. My box also came with a cleaning brush, clipped into the funnel clip on my original photo. Were these brushes included, or has this been added by a previous owner? Not that I’m sure what you’d use the brush for... Maybe @Jean J can help? Can you check your SL box Jean and see what lurks and where to perhaps add another example?
Great find @BigStevie super condition, are you going to light it? With regards to all the clips and fixings I think the curved nature of that clip lends itself to supporting the funnel. I have 2 of these and 3 boxes, all dated 1955, yes I know that only dates the box....items stored as pictures attached.
@David Shouksmith Any idea what the brush was meant to be used for? @Gary Waller As the lamp has been lit previously, yes, it will get fired up! Another vote for funnel held by two clips. I wonder if we’ll ever know what the original configuration was? Or, for that matter, if Tilley themselves turned them out with varying contents/configuration?
The brush was part of the package, I may be wrong but it makes sense to me that it's part number 180 . . . Burner Cleaning Brush and as such, it would be used (mainly) for cleaning out the air tubes and anywhere else it would fit. I suppose it does but a) it's not a very good fit. b) the funnel is already supported c) why have the mantle box floating around getting in the way every time the lamp is taken out or put back in when there's a clip to hold it out of the way ? I'm not saying there's "a right way" or "a wrong way" as both ways work. Anyone know an ex-squaddy from the period who may be able to enlighten us ?
Here's another example but numbered 551 with the broad arrow on the base (inside or outside?). It is using the single clip for the funnel horizontally, and adjacent spring clip holding some spares packets. TILLEY WALL LAMP(OUT DOOR) MODEL SL61 WITH BOX | #251590887 Mike.
@Henry Plews , I agree with you on possibilities but looking at the last picture from your post above it seems that a package of mantles would be crushed over time. Ok, a full package filled with mantles somewhat lesser but still.
Like someone said, I assumed the bottle brush was for cleaning out the burner air intakes and spigot...
Probably, but that mantle box didn't come with the lamp. It came with some other spares I got at an auction, it was already crushed but fortunately, the two or three mantles inside it were not damaged. I'm in the process of repairing the cardbourd box and will pack it with something firm so that it keeps its shape.
My wife collects empty cigarette boxes, I cut wood and put that inside them to keep them from distortion. Just a thought.
If you can make a scan of all sides and send it to me with the dimensions, I can make a package for my box ;-)
Just checked box and it does have funnel and box of mantles in the lid. Thought it had a cleaning brush too but may be in bottom of box. Interesting label.
@Jean J That’s another vote for the mates in the clip. @Anthony Ah, I knew I’d read something somewhere....
Hi Big Stevie. Yes the image I posted was of the mark on your box, so just to ask is it 265 or a badly printed 255?
@Steve Wood Looking at the mark again and using a magnifying glass, it could very well be 255. Are we assuming that this might be a date stamp for February 1955, or am I getting ahead of myself here?
If it is 255 then the style of tank bottom sealing joint put them both in the same time scale. Should have Tilley- owl-England on the tank side. This is how I see it but could be wrong.
