Hi everyone, first post, great info on here! I've just got a handi kero pet in pretty rough condition but I've tidied it up and got it going but I damaged the end of the nrv a bit. I've seen on here about making a removal tool from a large bolt but I'm not sure of the size of the slot I need to cut into the bolt, can anyone help? I tried to upload a pic but it says file size to big what size do I need to reduce it to? Any help appreciated
    Cheers

You need a snug fit, I made one years ago (from good steel - a broken car oil pump /distributor shaft) just checked on a Handi 3/16" (+/_) a bees ?

The commercially made one I had purchase for when needed self destructed on its first try

Thanks for that, it was stuck open at first but after some carby cleaner and penetrene it seems fine now but I would like to know that I can get it out after I damaged it if need be
    Cheers

Thanks, I'm going to make one like your number 5 as by the sound of it the larger diameter helps line it up better. I made the mistake of making one out of a large screwdriver

Finally figured out how to post a pic, I had to resize it to 75% IMG_20210417_081450_copy_4500x6000.jpg

    What a beauty!

BTW, I made myself an NRV removal tool almost identical to your number 5.

Yep it's a beauty! It was in a pretty sorry state when I got it, gummed up generator and leaky nrv and pretty cruddy but a bit of carby cleaner, replacement globe and some elbow grease made a big difference. Ive never had one before and Im impressed with the light output. I'm going to pull the fuel valve off and repack it, it seems to be the same as a coleman I'm hoping. The valve wheel screws right out so that's not right, I'd say it's missing the little wire circlip thing that I've seen on coleman's

Welcome @Brian Reynolds from Toowoomba Queensland.
I have found the Handi lanterns to be well made and run a treat, further the kero models seem to preheat and light very quickly.
Is that Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the civil engineer, on your avatar?
    Cheers

Yep it's my first one, I want more now! Yes that's Brunel, I thought I would honour him by using his picture lol. I think he's a great man way ahead of his time and thinking outside the box

    Welcome to CPL @Brian Reynolds
Your Handi has cleaned up nicely.

The spindle on the shutoff valve will just screw out (no retaining clip). And the packing will most likely be a series of fiber washers held on with a round nut. This post might be of help Handi Kero-Pet

Thanks Robbo, you've done a fantastic job there! I ran into more trouble yesterday, I pumped it up and fuel gushed out the pump tube and on closer inspection I saw that the base of the tube where the nrv screws into had popped off believe it or not! So with nothing to lose I desoldered the tube and noticed the base was just pressed on like an interference fit.
I have soldered the base to the tube and resoldered the tube back in and managed to fit a new nrv from an aladdin 1a in there. I will reassemble everything today and see if I was successful or not.
    Cheers

    Brian, your welcome.
The base of the pump should have been soldered but it wasn't always done properly. Congratulations on a successful bit of surgery.

Thanks Robbo, it holds pressure at least so all good there. The base appeared to have only one spot of solder on it. When it let go I learned why they call the tank a fount, it must have squirted a couple of metres lucky it wasn't lit. Now the comedy of errors continues as when I put it together the pricker needle snapped off inside the jet, so now the jet is blocked! I've tried compressed air, heat, fine wire off a small wire wheel with no joy. I'm just going to have to keep an eye out for a parts one. It's devastating lol

    @Brian Reynolds

If you take off the nipple and heat it until it’s dull red then drop it in cold water, repeat etc. you might be able to free the needle from the jet.

    Cheers

Thanks Tony, I've just got it going, I made a super thin pricker from a piece of wire on the bench grinder and worked it through the top and got it out, phew! So now it's running minus the whole pricker rod. If I can figure out how to attach my home made pricker to the rod I'll be laughing.
    Cheers

Wow! Incredible, thanks for that! What a great writeup, thanks to guys like you we will keep these things going for many years to come. I bodgeyed a piece of about 1.6mm wire onto an aladdin removable needle rod which has the same thread as the handi rod and spent ages just touching it on the bench grinder to make a passable needle on the end, put it together and it works for about 15 minutes and then starts flaming through the mantle. I reckon I may have damaged the jet.
    Cheers
