I was delighted to find this lamp at a village hall auction. The original glass is missing and has been replaced with a globe from a guardsman.

One thing that puzzled me is that it is painted in matt black paint when I expected it to be gloss black. However the decal is present so I am not sure if it was repainted.

I have just bought one similar to this from a place in Birmingham, I'm just hoping its the real thing and not a bit of a mongrel I'm waiting for my mate to pick it up for me and send it so once it's here I'll add a couple of pics.

More likely to be the original paint. They were black originally and with the decal still looking good the chances are it is. What is interesting is the small black thumb knob on the pump. That is a piece used in the mid 1950s and reinforces my feeling that these lamps are from about 1952 to 1954 ish and later than the Pork Pie type.

One thing that has always puzzled me is this is a type we knew nothing about until about 5 years ago when a couple turned up. The older collectors such as myself, Mick, Jeff, Henry, Roger and a few others were not aware of it as it had never been seen. Then two turn up and within maybe 4 years another dozen or so appear. They are mid 1950s and we had never seen or heard of them so where were they hiding and where have they all suddenly appeared from? ::Neil::

From what I see in the image, that seems to be the glass from a 1616 Bullfinch Handilight - the glass is part no. 1618...

I recently bought a 2081 globe for it from Base Camp. I know it is not the correct type but it looks better.

Yes, the correct globe for the SDR is Part No. 78 but the 2081 fits, although I think you need to grind off a few millimetres...

Neil I think people have realised that these lamps are now worth a few quid and its a case of oh I have one of those in the shed :D/ let get it on to eBay of something similar
That's why I think they turn up more often just the same as a lot of these rare lamps are now turning up ,
Not just collectors are buying these lamps now it people who know what the are worth and see a big profit
