How about trying this? Reporting price gouging | eBay they may have developed the policy for essential items, but perhaps worth experimenting with anyway?
Well right at the other end of the scale there's this:- BIALADDIN/VAPALUX HOOD - ORIGINAL/VINTAGE | eBay £20 including P&P for that P.O.S.! I don't know if the seller is a member here but no matter - I wouldn't embarrass myself even bothering to list that in the expectation someone will buy it. How could anyone stoop so low...
It's people like this bidding silly money on lamps just so they can break it and sell the parts, yes I sell a few parts but these are from scrap lamps that are not fit for use and may help other users out ect.
As I was looking at the majority of his his used parts I was counting how many blown out bottoms that would have been.
Hee hee haw haw haw haha ha hoo hoo ... please stop, my sides are splitting ... ha ha ha ha hoo hoo haw haw ahw ah. Call a doctor ... Still, 'tis good to live in hope rather than expectation.
Hello all and so the madness spreads to Australia as well, looks like a great time to cash out. But not for me I will keep on finding bargains that are still out there hidden away on my road trips. Never will I pay this much.
@Buggerlugs I was totally amazed by that, and also the Tilley 246b (500 series) that just went for $218.50! What’s going on? What does it mean for the harder to come by stuff I’d like for my little collection?
@kero-scene Like this BR49, wow I have three of them and I didn't even pay that much for all of mine. At that price I would have plenty of change in my pocket and I mean plenty. This one also had a massive dent in the fount, sorry if someone from here payed that much.
Pretty sure that the top seller ships OS and that explains the high price achieved. Not that long ago (just before Covid) I sold fifty Tilley 246 lanterns to a market seller for $1475. Fifteen had the deep globes and 35 the normal shallow globes..the deep globe ones I sold for $40 each and the shallow globes $25 each... They were all in OK condition.....the market has changed a lot since then!! One could say the buyer got a bargain but I was happy to clear up some space as my main interest is Coleman and other Australian manufacturers. I was smart enough to remove the insect sceens from them prior to selling...so they may net a few extra dollars for me!!!
If people want to pay silly money it's fine by me but I'm actually worried that this craziness will affect our hobby. If lanterns become so expensive, few of us will want to pay excessive amounts for mediocre lamps, in which case there won't be anywhere near the number of fettles, rebuilds and problem solving threads that there has been and I'm going to miss that! I hope it doesn't happen but it's a concern!
I am wondering who amongst us is mad. Is this a rarity? It just sold on a NZ auction site for $378. Above my pay grade. Has a member here bought it?
As bad as I would like a pork pie lamp; It wasn’t me. A lamp in like condition in the US would fetch at least $300 on the Bay of Evil here; shipping from NZ usually kills the deal for the uninitiated.
I really have to have a lantern really bad to pay a lot of money for it! Mind you, On a few occasions I have. I think we all have at one time or other.
Side question about the claims: I do see this desciption often: "used as ww2 air field (runway) lights". Is this true?
I've heard of several kinds of light sources used as makeshift runway lights. I guess pressure lamps would be suited for this - but I doubt that they were used as "fixed" lights on permanent airfields. Seems quite the hassle having to refuel, relight and manually keep up the pressure of numerous lamps on a daily basis. Though all of this is just speculation on my part.
@WimVe & @revorge These two unused FL6s (1960) were part of the emergency equipment held at the Launceston airport (Tasmania, Australia). Tilley FL6 (1960; NOS) Tilley FL6 (1960; NOS; 2nd example) Cheers Tony
Emergency lighting, perhaps but I just have a little problem when it comes to “permanent” lighting… I know about the big search lights but that’s different.
Tilley made runway marker lamps AB1 (I believe the Imperial War Museum has one). Also in Jim Dicks book he mentions the SL3 Which were used on trolleys for aerodrome lighting. Also from Jim’s book, aforementioned AB1,
Hi @BigStevie Wow if the IWM has one that’s great news! Have you any more information on that? There are several IWM sites.. would it be Duxford at all ??
