Tilley LD2 fettle

I saw it and had to have it; now I need to see it alight. Missing the sniffer tube as always but I have an idea for a replacement.

The newer style all aluminum pump is stuck together tight, as aluminum usually does. Has anyone got a secret to getting the pieces apart without destroying them?

That’s a nice find

I know some of the pumps had a screw down pump knob so may be worth a try?
Heat is always good, perhaps just off the boil water first? Don’t know if that’ll improve things or make it worse
They are common enough over here in Cheshire

 

A fine fettling project.
Try soaking the entire pump in vinegar, but check it regularly.

 

What’s the length of that pump John?

 

Is this the one that was on eBay recently? Think it’s missing the main burner part as well isn’t it?

 

Boil the pump in a pan of water, that's good for freeing aluminium.

I wouldn't have thought anyone was seriously going to use an LD2 these days for either of its intended purposes.

Is the burner 'shroud' on that version meant to be like that or has it taken a knock? On my LD2 MkI the two top edges are parallel...

 

Well I should imagine the part that fits inbetween the shroud that makes a flame come out the end? Or am I missing something? For your next question who is going to use it for its exact purpose? No One but people like to see them working, Well same as "who uses a tilley lamp for the exact purpose" no one they just get used because there fun to use.

 

Well, I think most people here (probably everyone - except you, seemingly) use Tilley lamps and lanterns for their "exact purpose" - to provide illumination...

 

Okay so what's the exact use for a tilley railway lamp, hhhmmm oh yeah to light up the backgarden, oh right strange, I thought there use was to use on railways to help light areas for repair/inspection ect.

 

Your total missing the point they don't have to be used but we do because they are fun to use, but as above not used for their exact purpose, hopefully you understand.

Just like the leak detector lamp John want to see it working because it's fun not because he's got a dodgy fridge .

@Rickylee Yes, there is a burner part missing but best I can tell it’s just a tube to fit over the vaporizer and a tip to compress the flame. Should be able to knock one out without too much trouble, just have to muck about with the size of the hole.

@Jean J I’ll have to measure when I get home but I figure somewhere between 10 and 12 cm. It appears to be all aluminum.

Looks like I’ll be trying the boiling trick tonight; it’s currently soaking in penetrating oil.

Sheet metal is easy enough to straighten and I like everything I own to have the ability to work; it cuts down on the spares pile.

 

@John I wouldn't know what part is missing it just looked incomplete like it should have some type of burner on the end, I just wouldn't know as I've never owned one, hope you can get a flame out of it as I would love to see it going.

This is the only picture that I’ve got so far; haven’t really delved into the gallery just yet.

Appears to be a steel tube that is actually held in place by the hood with a brass tip in order to focus the flame.

 

My rather sad leak detector with not quite all of the “sniffer”.

Quite a bit of work there Tony. From what we can see, it could come up quite well.

It looks like is been rattling around in a fridgies tool box for donkey’s years. I bet it could tell some tales about the leaks it’s detected?
