So after getting new lower parts of a R1 burner, we went for a second fire up post vapouriser clean. This vapoursier works perfectly in my FL6. The heater worked well but still has an bit of flaring. The last photo does show a small leak on the top pillar, which explains the fuel smell. This I can solder. It was running at full pressure (according to the indicator/pip) I can also see that the ring of "flamelets" is a bit uneven (pic 3). I have seen that it is possible to have the air flowing directly into the centre of the burner, or the centre can rotate to make the air go round 90 degrees. Which is correct or is it immaterial ? Hi Chris Sometimes less pressure can help with the extended flamelets A silly question but are any parts of the burner loose at all? You may want to test run it when dark or in a dark place/garage type space to check the burner isn’t getting too hot/starting to glow? another thought.. does the mantle have any holes in the mesh? Some do or used to have them?
Hi Pb The bottom "skirt" spins, and the centre will rotate. I am not sure if it is supposed to do that to allow the mantle suport to be screwed in with burner grid attached to the support. I had to put a rod down the air intake to lock it in place in order to do up the mantle support. The first test was in the dark and yes the lower pressure helped the flamelets and no the burner did not glow. The mesh is brand new and has two little holes. I did clean the inside of the burner as best I could but it seems to be non-dismountable. This is my first Tilley heater and I have nothing to compare it to.
If you really want to dismantle the burner, work your way around the join with a small screwdriver and open-up the crimp a little at a time until the parts can be separated. Areas where the folded-over join is loose can be tightened-up by tapping gently with a small cross pien hammer.
Thanks Henry - I might save that joy for a time when I have more time My suspicions are going to turn back to the vapouriser after some soldering I think as everything else seems OK
So winter is upon us in the UK and so attention returned to this little beast... After a bit of a soldering disaster (small torch too small, large torch far too big) I found a replacement fount. Still has some slight flaring and does not like full pressure so now after a better vapouriser. Cat bemused by it all..
Very nice! I had an early R1 and they're a good little heater. The nice glow cheers a room up in winter too.
Well after all that it was the vapouriser. New one fitted and now it works well, here it is at full pressure (according to the pip)
Ah, ok fair enough.. a chap I know has tried using the low odour paraffin, which worked but the heat output was much less.. the mantle was noticeably less bright?
