This lamp was in the same condition as the Coleman I bought last weekend. Again the color came off in the soap bath..( strong soap so...). Ok , also here I cleaned the tank to the copper color . Maybe later I will spray it back in the original color. For the clean up it was just ok for me. After taking all the parts and clean them also I put them all together. I made some seals to replace broken ones and the watertest was ok. i did not had a correct mantle ( have to order it ) so I tryed it with a single bond 350 Cp. I knew somewhere it would not work but , ok..you know.. The wick to heat up the lamp was washed a few days ago and was dry now. I rolled it back up and closed it with a staple. That worked fine. I will order also a new one on the adress I got from the forum here. Now it was to see if pressure was building up and gas was formed after heating. All went well untill I opend the valve to lit the lamp. i got only yellow and dark flames but that came because of the not correct mantle I guess. For all the rest this lamp looks good and I can do the full and hopefully good test when order is here. The top is still enamel because I have not made the decision what the color will be for this lamp.
Hi Tom - congrats on getting a nice lantern. I think we can see that the flames have just blasted past your mantle, so I would agree not a great test or indication of how things are going to end up. You should be aware that it is not a valve but is a "Jet pricker" - it only moves the pricker wire up and down. The wire will impede the escape of gas/fuel but not stop it. The lighting procedure is close cap, preheat, then pump ! all this with the Jet pricker fully down. The soot may also be in part due to low pressure or insufficient pre-heating The top cap or hood or vent is enameled. Paint will not fare very well on this as it is just too hot. For tank paint idea :Bialaddin 300x Repainted
@Fireexit1 Thanks...I know these things but I did not write em dowm in the good words..sorry for that..( translation is not my strongest ). For the enamel cap ..I I'm gonna paint it I will first sandblast the enamel of. It's a hard something and just grinding will not give a clean or very good result. the grey in your example is a nice color...I keep that in mind. I had lamps before with paint on the cap..I use stove paint..can hold 800 °c so that must be ok.
@Fireexit1 Now that I am thinking about the heating..that will be indeed the problem I think..With my Hipolito I also heat twice , fill the cup two times..Today it was also much colder outside and 1 cup heating was probably not enough..Why I did not think about that is a question I ask myself now
For the vitreous-enamelled hood, I'd just leave it as it is. Paints are usually less ideal for the hood (even the heat-resistant VHT paints don't fare too well on lantern hoods). If you want another colour or recoat it for better appearance, I'd suggest to send it for a professional re-enamelling job unless you have the means to do it yourself. For the fount, you can use any good-quality paints if you have decided to paint it. A heat-resistant paint will suit the frame well. It is not necessary that the yellow flames are due to an incorrect mantle. More often, they are due to incorrect fuel-ratios. There are various reasons for incorrect ratios.
@MYN ..I was looking for that too. Re enamel the hood. I looked around and it will be not that cheap. For the moment all stays like it is. I think today I will look further in the burning process and see if the lamp can work like it should.
Yes, in my opinion, appearance and cosmetics can always be regarded as of secondary importance. Safe and good functionality should always be the number 1 priority for these things. Unless of course, if the unit is already beyond safe repairs and you have decided it to be a non-functional, shelf-queen for display purposes only. Opinions might differ of course. Anyway, professional re-enamelling can be pretty expensive, especially if you are not doing it in bulk. I'm sure you'd be able to get it back into perfect working order sooner or later.
