Why did Coleman originally make CQ with a hex nut in early years ,then later just solid nub on bottom? When I get my CQ I bought for parts( I'd like to build one with 2 lamps - combine with best working/ visually best parts- to one best unit... If the fount is visually very clean inside and out do I have to do a dunk test in water and check for leaks if it's a unknown running or non running lamp that's complete? (If I do need to do a dunk test do you leave the generator on?)
Lamp manufacturers were always tweaking their products to improve them and to cut costs. In my opinion, it's always best to test thoroughly and the only part of a CQ., burner system which has to be fitted for a dunk test is the shut off valve.
I'm confused, everything I've read and watched a video on these Coleman CQ nickel fonts is to dunk tank test the fount and watch for pinholes bubbles?
Oh, after rereading I think I may know what you're talking about .you're saying the shut off valve needs to be fitted/threaded into the fount correct?
Leave the shut off valve fitted where it is meant to be and make sure that it's properly tightened and fully shut off and then pump in some air and tighten the filler plug/pressure valve, that will hold the air for the dunk test and if there are any leaks you will see the bubbles.
I do love the style of the CQ table lamps, especially if you have a shade as well, and they work like a treat. Enjoy your fettle.
No air passes through it in my preliminary pump test just listening for air passing through generator and out burners so possibly after heat /quench it will? The glass globe looks very modern so I don't even know if it will handle the heat from burning?(Thought I read somewhere that it was a certain type of glass used for these gas pressure lamps?)
Watch this video on how to clean a CQ generator If you mean the shade, it will most probably stand the heat.
That was a link to your other thread asking about jet tipe for the q99 with some answers/suggestions.
@My29cq329 Oh...so no tip on the q99....and no air passes through. hmmmmmmmmmmmm Process of elimination...air up the font with the generator and fuel removed (just font and air in it). Put a rag over the hole where the generator connects and open the valve. Does air hiss out? If you get air hissing out, then the valve is not plugged...and its probably the generator. Others can correct me but I think a standard 220 generator tip is the same diameter. I would watch that whole video and try the burn/quench cycle and also try carb cleaner (from auto parts store sold in a spray) to blow out the q99.
I got it burning today without the q99 gen. A couple issues 1) small slow fuel leak where Gen screws in,( were these supposed to have sealant on threads?) 2) one side is brighter than other- I think one screen was more open looking than other so I'm assuming that's all it was so I'll need to remove and blow out better with liquid of some sort, scub and reassemble and put new mantle on it Was really excited to see it up and running even tho I'll lose a mantle out of the deal... 3) did they make a special funnel for these lamps?( I used a regular Coleman filter funnel in conjunction with a smaller regular funnel b/c opening on a CQ is too small just for filter funnel alone and while filling it over flowed all over as it seamed it wouldn't flow fast enough out of funnel into fount...)
1. No, they are meant to seal by face to face friction. Make sure the brass facing surfaces have to nicks or scrapes and are the correct shape. After that, use some copper grease on the threads but don’t overtighten. Don’t operate with the leak. 2. Clean spiders, soot etc from all components, and make sure the generator is shooting fuel vertically. 3. This funnel; Coleman No. 0 Funnel (Copper - Canada) Cheers Tony
Ok, I'll disassemble and apply small amount of grease to threads. I blew all out and actually am glad I did, there was a small spider web built inside tiny screen on end that threads into valve with many other throughout burner I purchased a funnel that's correct for it
Well, took it all apart blew everything out again to make sure I didn't miss something looked really good in with flashlight everywhere (clean the mating surfaces up and got the leak to stop)but left mantle Burns bright ,right mantle is only about a quarter of the way lit?(When I turn the valve off on the left side the typical little fireball is there for a few seconds but not on the right that eventually goes away just like on lanterns) If I don't have enough fuel in this tank will that do it?
I figured out what was doing it and I'll attach pictures to show someone else that may run into this. The female threads on top of valve was missing the inner part that raises generator up into burner hole( without this part my generator was barely up inside hole) I swapped pieces out to one that had this extra bit to raise it up and burning perfect!
The screw driver shows small collar installed and other one not there( I'm not sure if this small screw in collar was always there and the one that is in my picture that doesn't have it was removed at some point and never re installed or what?)
