This is a Tilley X246 dated 4/1959. Nothing really interesting about this example, except for two things. One, that it came with new old stock (NOS) hood, burner and mantle and these had not been fired; and second, it was in a wooden carry box that has PF/SE stencilled on it, which, given where it was found would most like stand for Police Force/South East [ie the South East Queensland Police Region]. The box is well made and functional but very basic. The control cock knob is the "pull off" variety. The bail has the "clip" mechanism to lock the handle upright. The bail ends also prevent the hood from being lifted off without pulling them outwards. "Made in England"/"459XA" —> April 1959. "Pat. No. 1518939" Bail locked upright. The NOS hood, burner and mantle. These will not be used on this lantern and have been replaced. The box "Lamp/PFSE" I'm still doing a bit of maintenance on the box, including giving it a coat of tung oil and bluing the front lock. Up and Running It's running well and will go into the camping pile. Cheers Tony
Very interesting read, which makes my coffee taste even nicer. Love the police link to this lamp. Steeped in history.
