I found this old Tilley lantern when I was cleaning out my parents' storage. I remember that it was last used at my grandparents' cottage sometime in the early 1980s. I know they bought it maybe in the 50's or 60's before they had electric light installed. I thought about restoring it and joined to get information about spare parts, restoration and of course to find out the exact model and age.

Marking 5580A on the bottom, is it possible to determine the age based on this?

    Welcome aboard!

The date code stands for May 1958.

That lantern should restore well enough and the first link below shows the washer kit which you will need and the second link shows the relevant gallery pages.

There is plenty of advice available here and there are several Finnish members of this forum.

    Welcome, @Hannu Viik

    Your lantern should restore well.

    Here is some advise:

    1. Clean the plated brass with soapy water first.

    2. Don’t use course material to clean or polish it, as I can see that some of the speculum plating is very thin and some of the brass is exposed. Therefore I would polish with Autosol and cloth only, or gently with very, very fine steel wool (0000 grade).

    3. Use Autosol or car polish on the hood.

    Cheers

    Tony
