I’m hoping a black or pink one will turn up but what are the chances of that happening. Actually I have had two chances of owning a pink one, the first I wasn’t willing to pay over a certain sum and the second I wasn’t even given the chance to make a bid. It still rankles with me.

Hello Pete, I do know someone here in Shetland who has a gold coloured VL1, but it was her family's main Tilley and she grew up with it in use and she still uses it during power cuts so she won't part with it, which is understandable.

They were the two colours I couldn't ever get. I've seen a pink one once and know someone here who has another one but despite trying hard, didn't ever manage to get it out of his sweaty mitts. Black - no chance!

Playing VL1 snooker is an expensive game!

Bugger! - I could have brought my four to you and we'd have had the set!:D/

I had a plan to get a pink one from someone here but he wasn't for parting with it, probably still isn't. I had my name on a reproduction owned by Neil and when I got it, I was going to spray the 'vase' black. Still, it's all water under the bridge now and it took me only a week to stop crying after I sold them... :-&

Two minds but with a single thought @David Shouksmith. No intention to deceive so I left the base alone. Who needs more than one old gold anyway.

    Cheers, Pete.

The handkerchief shade is on page 64 in the Tilley book. I got it NOS from Neil - he got a few from someone in the Historic Lighting Club who had found them in an old ironmongery shop IIRC...

I don’t find that handkerchief shade very attractive really and surely it’s impractical? Shouldn’t be too difficult to make one would it if one fancied it?

The material certainly looks to be resting on something more solid than just a wire.

    Cheers, Pete!

Well, it's horses for courses, naturally - I didn't exactly have a choice of designs. The fabric rests on a wire frame to keep it away from the burner - see page 64 in Jim Dick's Tilley book. I wish now I'd taken some photographs of the frame - perhaps the new owner will oblige.

Just the wire frame which was available on its own for 1/6d - 7.5p so I suppose you could add your own material if you were handy with a needle. The whole thing was 8/6d - 42.5p. My example cost quite a bit more than that!

I did once get some Christmas material and edging to make a few of my own - obviously for display during the festive season. It's all still in the bag somewhere around here...

Hello Matthew, do you think you could give me a pic of the frame but also the dimensions of the actual silk shade? Not saying I’ll do anything with it but you never know.
    Thanks
    Kind regards
    Jean

I'm pretty sure mine came from the same direction as David's via the historic lighting club. I'm not sure how many were found originally though. I'll take some pictures and get some sizes for you when I can.

Hi Pete, yes still lurking. Not much changes in the lamp collection for me but I'm looking forward to Newark again this year.:D/
