Good day all. I am just tidying up another lamp. I have purchased some plastikote mettalic paint as I have read many members have used it on various projects. I was wondering, do I need to laquer afterwards? Is it a personal choice, or does it definitely require it ? Thank you in advance.

    Hi @Steptoe.

    Greetings fellow Norfolkite!

I don’t recall lacquering any of mine and they were predominantly all users, out in a field camping somewhere.

Hope you have success with your project.

    Regards Jeremy

I've never done it personally. If you allow the paint to cure properly at normal room type of temperatures then it's fine imo. I usually leave it circa 72hrs.

I like to use plasikote paint easy to apply nice finish. Never ever lacqueard it tho.
Let it cure for a few days some will burn of say like on top of a floodlight maybe but looks more used then good paint used it many times
    Cheers pete

I have found that laquer can change the appearance of some paint i.e. A question of paint
I used halfords car laquer and it's pretty fuel proof.

@rayw Hi thank you for your comment. I was curious to know but it seems most members do not use laquer over the paint. As you say the Halfords laquer is quite good I once sprayed a Tilley X246B a copper colour and used the halfords clear coat over top which left a very nice finish. I have left the plasikote cure for considerable time now and refuelled and lit it yesterday. Cheers for now.

I must admit I have half a can of Halfords lacquer lurking somewhere, so I can think of at least 3 lamps I'll finish it off on. Thanks for the heads up.

@Steptoe That looks lovely mate. I've only got one 'B' in my collection, which is currently bare brass and in need of tlc. I might just give it the copper/lacquer touch now. I've some Plastikote Copper that needs using up. Cheers!

    @Steptoe

I stopped using clear coat over most coloured paints when I started using enamel/ceramic paints and curing the paint in an oven. Curing sets the paint hard (same process in spraying a car).

I do sometimes use clear coat if I want either a matte finish or a very shiny finish, but again I use a clear coat that can be cured. Some paints cure by being left for a week or so, but putting them in a 65C oven for an hour or more does the same thing.

    Cheers

    Tony

I use "Canbrush Spray Paint For metal Plastic and Wood". No laquer needed. Probably the "easiest" paint I have ever used as well.
