Here is my TL 106 from June 1960 - the last variation of the TL 106. This variation is not that common, I am told. There is another one, @Matthew92's, in the Reference Gallery. [Matthew: this lamp confirms the cream coloured tank is original]. It has the first version of the "push-on" knob for the control cock. Tilley 182 "onion" globe. The Tilley Patent burner. The chipped cream paint indicates that the cream was painted over a gold underlay (rather than brass). Below is a picture of the gold painted bottom of the tank. 6/1960. Up and running: I replaced the washers and seals (The Fettle Box) and cleaned it up. It was a straightforward fettle. Cheers Tony
Nice example Tony. I'll check the one I got, I had to do some extensive fettling ....... I get some pics as well. Cheers Peter
Yes these are not at all common and the short TL136 is even rarer. I have seen a few and from memory all are I think dated in 1960. So posibly only made for that year. A very nice find. ::Neil::
That's a fine example and my example of that lamp is also dated 1960, but my example of it's sibling is dated 1959. 1959,TL136.
@Tony Press that's a lovely lamp you've got there. On mine the masking on the brass seemed a little off, not quite as clean as you'd expect from a factory job which is why I thought possibly that it had been resprayed. But I don't think it has, the lamp is overall in very good condition, so it's just Tilley quality control. Now I would just like to find the short stem one and a chrome one and I'll be set.
One of my favourite lamps, Tony! Mine also has the gold paint on the bottom of the fount, but I see no sign of it under the cream paint on the fount.
I don’t own the later TL106 but assume it is the same height as the earlier one. I’ve pictured this one next to a TL120 and the difference is in the height of the column which is roughly 3”. The column on the TL120 is, of course, fixed and not to be confused with the TL120a which is detachable.
Now that IS rare thing. I have only ever seen one TL120 painted cream. They are normally found plated. ::Neil::
Neil, is there such a thing in as this shape (type 5 in the PLC) as a table lamp, in anything other than the 18 1/4 inch tall ??? To me this shape is the TL120 (18 1/4 inch) . In the reference gallery there are a few catalogues with the TL120 being plated. This one mentions plating but shows cream paint.
Yes in 1960 that shape tank was used for TL 106 and TL136. So both tall and short table lamps. Both are rare ish because they were only made for that one year or season and I have never seen either in any other finish than that cream paint. TL 120 is sort of between those in height and 18 1/4 sounds about right. I was just not aware that TL120 was ever made painted cream. ::Neil::
@Buggerlugs I assume I measured it with the gallery on. Note that it has a Tilley No.606 vapouriser, not the No.169. I’m a few thousand kilometres and +15°C away from my lamps at the moment, but I can check next week. Cheers Tony
