Having real fun with my 1946 X246 Tilley Lamp rebuild. I replaced all the Seals on the Pump including the Leather, the Control Cock and Vapouriser Tube. Mind I couldn't replace the wee rubber Seal in the Base of the Pump NRV because the square replacement supplied by Tilley didn't fit and I stuck with the original. So feeling good about it put some Paraffin in the Lamp and gave it about 25 pumps, unfortunately I found the Paraffin was flowing into the Pump and leaking from the Pump Plunger screw Fitting, Paraffin everywhere. I believe that I now have to replace the NRV Pump Seal can anyone out there confirm my Analysis of the Fault and offer advice where I can obtain a correct replacement Seal. I last used the Tilley ca 40 Years ago and it work just fine. Thank you and a Happy, safe Peaceful Healthy New Year.
Hi Peter You are correct in your assumption and you require the “old” style nrv washer set as found here: Tilley NRV & Control Cock Valve seal - Pack of 4 - The Fettlebox. They are also used in the control cock. These are made by Ross @spiritburner who owns this site. He uses Viton and the quality is excellent. Regards Jeremy
Dear Jeremy, So many Thanks for your Reply and Advice, so you're Broadlander, I love your Videos, really excellent. I see that most of your Videos were made ca eight Years ago, will you be perhaps doing some more. I do hope you are keeping well. I became hooked on Tilley Lamps because I inherited my Father-in-law's X246B Tilley Lamp, we were both P.Way Railwaymen, and we often used them at Work before Generators came on the scene. I lost my dear Wife Carol in 2022 and the inherited Tilley Lamp became very dear to me. I bought the X246 about 40 years ago when we lived in West Dorset. I am also interested in Primus Stoves, as a 79 Year old and have a great Affection for old Tech. I live in a wee Hamlet in very rural North Devon almost the other end of the Country to you. Thank you once again for responding and once again Peace, Happiness and good Health for 2026.
@Peter Hillier For my sins, I am Broadlander. I have no plans to make any new videos at present, however I do try to reply to all comments on YouTube. I still enjoy my lamps and lanterns as I do my pressure and spirit stoves, especially when camping. Are you a member of the parent site, Classic Camp Stoves? Regards Jeremy
Dear Jeremy, Very many Thanks for your Message, no I'm no a Member of the Parent Site 'Classic Camp Stoves' I'll have a wee look and join that too. I recently bought a Nr5 Primus on eBay as I remembered that my Uncle had a Morris 1000 Traveller and we always used stop for a brew up when we went out with him, my dear Parents didn't own a Car in those Days. Happy New Year to you and your Wife, most importantly good Health.
Hi Peter Thank you for your wishes, and may I offer the same to you. You will also find the seals and washers required for your Primus No. 5 from the Fettlebox too. More likely than not, there will be a date stamp on the base by way of a letter code. See: Primus Dating Chart 1911 - 1964. Plenty of friendly knowledgeable folk there to help with your questions. regards, Jeremy
Dear Jeremy, Very many Thanks for your Message and Recommendation to join the Classic Camp Stoves, I had a wee look for a Date on my Nr5 but all I could find was 'made in Sweden' I have had good look but nothing fancy it might have been manufactured post 1964 and the Date stamped on the original Box which sadly I didn't get when I bought it off a Chap on eBay. On the Top of Tank the is in addition to it being manufactured in Sweden there is some looks a wee bit like Arabic. Thank you once again, it's damn cold this Morning here in Devon fancy it's even colder where you are to. Best Wishes, Peter.
