I just fettled this X246 for a friend. It's good to see another one saved from the tip. It was a straightforward fettle. I did my best with the tank, but it obviously had been the subject of chemical exposure and some poor cleaning. I polished it up as best I could and finished it with car wax. The hood was very rusty... BUT, i think I've found the best rust converter ever! I'll put a little post in the Fettling section on the rust converter: Before: After: Note, above, the older style black hood (without the lip on the top dome). It also had the older burner from which I had to remove a couple of dead spiders: I painted the cage with metal primer and VHT Aluminium paint. Fitted a new vaporiser and globe, and one of the Japanese mantles. Away she goes: Washers and seals from The Fettle Box.
Thanks, Jeff. I think my friend will be happy - it was pretty sad when he gave it to me. Seeing that these lamps are as old as I am, it's good to get them working again. Cheers Tony
Hello Tony, he should be pleased as he now has a good working lantern that should last for many years to come, Jeff.
Anyone know what the rust converter was ? I cant see anything referring to it when I search "rust converter"
@Beanie These days I use Ranax (which is an Australian proprietary product using phosphoric acid as its base) as my go to rust converter for jobs like this. I then paint the converted rust with pot belly stove black paint. It’s not gloss, but it withstands the heat. Tony
Thanks @Tony Press , been doing some reading around and it seems there are a few home made mixes about too
