I found this PL53 at the weekend. It has some interesting features that I haven't seen before. The burner is not the same as the standard Tilley burner. The spigot is wider and has a coarser thread. It has a two-part globe wire arrangement, which is not quite the same as the other PL53s that have been posted with two-part globe wires. When I got it someone had spray-painted the hood with black paint but when I took it off there was very little rust
Nice lamp you've got there. It's got the same globe cage as kenny's early one in the gallery 1930s (early) Tilley PL53 . By the look of it though, yours has been trimmed. It looks as though it would originally have had the four down wires continued to meet in the middle and attached to a ring around the vapouriser. The other twisted part looks like it should do. Very nice and rare piece indeed.
Hi james all early tilley burners all had that coarser thread seen quite a few like that. Many in poor condition with use over the years does the pump just have one hole in on the NRV? pete
Hi James ! Your PL53 looks to be made up from various lamps ! Circa 1930's. However the pump , not a clear pic looks to be mid 20's . mick
This burner is indeed an older type. I think it is early 1930s but could be older. They do not dismantle like the later types because the nozzle is part of the inner tube which has the air tubes screwed in so it cannot be removed without first removing the air tubes. Looks like this. ::Neil::
Hi Neil, The design of the burner is not the same as the pictures you have posted. The nozzle is a separate piece just like on later burners. James.
Mid 30s and later then. There are variations in the casting sizes though and sometimes from external examination it can be hard to tell which you have. ::Neil::
