I just got Lucky driving around looking for lamps I came to a store where they sold old army-stuff and there they had these ones:
And the last Photo is dedicatede to Matthew who was the first to notice them among a hipolito http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/6502 These lamps are not quite the same as the type 2, http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/348 as Neil shows. The pump ex. is different and like a 1954 instead. These lamps are origin and never fettled. Ejoy Claus C
Claus, this is the most amazing find! One could drive around for a decade and be lucky to find one beat up version of this exquisite lantern, but two NOS is almost beyond comprehension. I wish I was a fly on the wall to see how you were able to remain composed and make the sale. My hands would have been trembling and knees shaking, with conspiratorial thoughts running through my mind that someone would jump in front of me and grab them. Normally I find an old NOS lamp a blessing and a curse. One part of me wants to get it running to satisfy my lighting anxiety, and the other wants to leave it in it's virgin state. But you have two! And perhaps you can enjoy one in it's unique lighted splendor. They are a real treasure that I'm sure you will enjoy forever. Congratulations. Dan
Ha Dan. A fellow lamp-collector actually was there, we arrived the same time, and there I had a litle chock. He had already had made his order of some of them. I had only said yes to the one of them when I noticed they had even 1 more on the shelf for costumers to buy. There I got my other chock. The last one was the best. I have a picture you wont believe send and taken by him, but that photo belongs to the other guy and might show up here one fine day. The left lamp on the photo is used, so I can enjoy lightning it up. Claus C
I'll be crying myself to sleep again tonight won't I. Seriously nice pair though, and not something any of us are likely to see in that condition again. Except you of course, who'll probably sit and look at them every morning when you get up and every evening when you go to bed. Just remember there's always a place here for one when you get bored.
Thank you all guys! Tilley made here a "badass"-looking lamp. These are originally painted shinyblack but with a lack of quality. The left lamp has been used and it is seen clearly that from the tanklit and down where the fuel has been running the paint turns matt and I could imagine the whole lamp would turn matt over the years. A nice thing is Tilley painted the tanklit, the cage and the control-cock brass/gold so it would look kind of wrong if you polish the upperhood too bright. The colours fit each other just keeping it clean. To me the lamp looks stunning in the evening in dimm light and I cant help thinking "Darth Vader" "Prince of Darkness": It was on my wish-list for many month so bear with me Claus C
Some guys could fall down a outhouse, and come up with a string of pearls around their neck!!!! What luck! I've been trying to find one of these for years with no luck. Tilley lanterns of any kind are hard to find here but one of these is next to impossible!!! GREAT FIND!!!!
Wonderful find Claus, really wonderful!!! The good thing is, you have a used one you can light, and a NOS you can keep as a virgin (I am still looking for a "user" Coleman 238b... ) All the best, Wim
Me too, David, Damn, and I already bought my airline ticket for Denmark!! You won't have any trouble finding me, I'm the one with the ski mask over his head and can't walk a straight line!!!
You are all wellcome - you cant miss me - im standing with my back against the camera among normal people. You know - the big one with arms as thighs - notice my interest is fencing My father was the cavetroll from lord of the rings and he told me taught me to guard specially a Tilley SDR and to offer visiting fellowcollectors a good beer. Why is this lamp not more spread in the UK?. It seems in high qualtity and solid designed. The hood might be a bit complicated but the rest is basically a 246A with a nice reflector. Claus C
Hello Claus, the SDR., was more expensive than the Tilley Guardsman lantern back in the day, so that probably accounts for it's scarcity, Jeff.
Hehe David. So with permission from the fellow-collector I bring you his photo from short after we left the shop: Claus C
I would very much like to hear Neils comments on the age here. The Hood has the 6 nuts, the pumphandle is the one with ears attached and the tank is the type 2. The tank is also without a stamp. I put in the Picture of the patent-note attached and I hope Neil will throw some new light over this strange lamps production-year. The different types confuses me a bit and I cant quite see the differences clear but the tanks shape and the pumps. And No, David, I could not. This is not all my lamps - so I can only make 2 persons happy. Claus C
