Bought this last weekend at an antique fair for the tiny sum of £10 complete with the box, unfortunately no accessories though. Probably only been lit once, the original empty mantle packet was still in the box, so I should think it was tested and then put away for another day. Their loss, my gain. :D/ :D/

To charge it up quickly, simply pop it in your microwave for no more than 3 minutes... ;)

I can only envy all your UK-lamps and the price - but in that condition. Didnt sellers lead-dog bite at you Matthew :?: ;)

Well unfortunately David, Apple have pulled iOS 8 from the App Store so I don't currently have "wave".  Perhaps I should just attach it to a kite during a thunder storm. :-k

It was rather a bargain Claus, but I have to say that the majority of the lamps I see, including the crap are ridiculous prices. Very occasionally you stumble across someone who is more interested in moving things on and seeing someone else have the enjoyment than trying to rip you off left, right and centre. :rage:

Very true words Matthew. I was at my local market on Tuesday where there was a very shabby Tilley FL6. The guy wanted £450.00 "cos it's an antique mate". I passed it up and bought a Sirram 'Aristocrat' boiling set off the next stall for £15.00  .

Yes Terry, I had the same thing, a rusted up old floodlamp with one burner tube, "350 quid coz I've seen them sell for more and people don't care about missing parts". Perhaps I'm on my own, but I do care. I still wouldn't have paid that, I passed on a pair of mint Swedish army ones on their wooden tripods for £270 each.

    Hi Matthew,

The chromed 300X, sure is a marvelous lamp to behold, what a deal you managed it for also (unbelievable really, but luck does fall like that sometimes); well done & it's one to watch out for now.
It's one of the best looking British lamps I've ever managed to set my eyes on (I've turned a green colour & the pressures now UP)

Don't talk to me about Matthew's luck otherwise I'll have to go and lie down in a darkened room for several hours... ](*,)

    Yep David,

"Anyone for a small tub of rough cut ruby's, going cheap @ 10 quid" ?

"Everyone duck the stampede & keep your earmuffs on, I'm making a clean getaway" !! That's some lamp that, proper salivating tackle, cleaner than owt I have near as damn it, Brit-wise.
Gneiss's 310 next door has a strangely coloured hood to it, never seen a shade of green like that before neither; it's a bit kooky, wouldn't mind knowing if the tincture or shade had a name to I.D it later ?
I'm having over half a dozen different hoods, vents & cowls re-enameled, it might be that this shade could be matched on it. . . .

    Cheers,

    Jon  :p

Yes - I've wondered about that too. The 310s normally have a softer shade of green. But possibly it's because the lamp is running and the high temperature has altered the colour shade. Many vitreous enamels seem thermochromic to an extent...

    Hmmmh, David,

The 252A Coleman Milspecs vent of mine, does that Thermochromic thingamyjig also, it goes a bit paler than the 310 of Gneiss's looks to be at in burn, but then (252A) is still a much darker olive than the Milspecs lower fount appears normally all the time, ect.
I was quite happy for the elasticated return, as some can end up staying slightly off shade, affecting the pzazz factor, sometimes quite considerably.
It might be that the hoods for the 310's or others (if MOD) possibly had some olive tincture added to the vitreous process occasionally(?); Gneiss's looks too uniform in the 360, top to bottom.

'But' the Vapalux M320 I've thus far only ever used & seen lit continually myself, gives extreme heat build up in the hood; so much so, I'd bought a replacement recently, because the old original one had started to drop enamel portions off from it. These were all blacks, but just mentioning because the M320 does tend to run a whole lot hotter than any Tilley storm lamp I've ever run before.

    Cheers

I have two 310s and a 305 with this style hood on and all three are a slightly different shade of green... As David suggested they do darken with heat, but I think there is also some variation due to manufacture.

    Hiya,

Particularly from what I can make out from your own there Gneiss, the vitreous looks "as it was meant too" IMHO, & with a deep coating; they do go darker but with greens or darker colours, it isn't as annoying so much, but with paler vents & hoods it's noticed much more.
I've noticed quite a few red Big Hats from the US, that have been either been done to the dickens with "much use over long periods of burn" during lifespan, or just possibly the vent endured an irregular dosing of enamel coat somehow (too rich or weak ?), affecting its finish there at the factory, after curing took place.
Chemistry, I never was much good at but your lamp looks a fine example (good stuff ;) ) !

I'm looking for a real nice stopcock knob, in red (no damage, pin sharp), for a 310 (grey tank) with a red hood & brand spank reflector I've just bought recently, any pointers it'd be much appreciated thanks ?

The Milspecs A252 valve wheels are the same colour as your lamps hood there, I don't know the material they're made from accurately (possibly Bakelite or just old plastic) but a tincture was added to lift them away from this usual wheels predominant colour, the black.

    Hoping to add a few Vapalux's & a Bialaddin
ma' self shortly, got the photo's but they're a bit dingy, as taken indoors ! I'm waiting for a dry & bright day preferably . . . . . it's much better sorted outdoors, ect.

    Cheers,

    Jon  .
