Bought this one on Ebay recently, lacquered parts looked a mess, with verdigris, stains and all sorts of muck, so that's been stripped back and polished. The paintwork I believe is all original though, looking at the condition of the gallery, it's seen very minimal use with slight discolouring, so no reason why it should have been repainted.
I was tempted to go for this one Matthew but resisted as I very, very rarely buy off eBay preferring to go out and find them on my own. Still, it looks very nice indeed.
Thanks everyone, the shade is an original Claus, it's still the only one I have, it pops up occasionally on different lamps for photography purposes. As nice as it looks now Jean, there was an initial disappointment when I first unpacked it, as the condition wasn't quite as I'd hoped. With the lacquer as it was and a few spots on the tank. But after a clean I'm a lot happier with it. I wish I had more places to go and find lamps in the wild, but down here in the Midlands pickings are a little slim if it wasn't for Ebay my collection would be rather small, but then atleast I'd probably be able to buy a house.
Could well do, swap the gallery for a more used one and away we go. So long as it doesn't leak from places it shouldn't like so many other lamps I buy.
Yes it is Ray, well T10,Tl10 and any others it fits. I'm pretty sure its a Tilley though, it came on one anyway. I've just received a pleated one in the post which I've put on this lamp now.
To use some old Australian vernacular, I fair dinkum love the look of these old Tilley table lamps. To me, it looks great with the cloth shade. I really do struggle to tell the differences between different models. I've just bought founts that look, to my untrained eye, the same as this lamps fount. Paint colour looks the same, yet I thought they were named Princess. I very much admire the trained eyes on this forum. How they can tell what is what by picking out, seemingly, minute details to differentiate between models has got me, again, fair dinkum beat.
Hello Matty, the Queen and the Princess were earlier models and the tanks are a different shape and the rims of the tanks are different and the position of the pressure indicator is also different and there are some minor differences between the early 1950's Queen and Princess lamps and the mid 1950's models. If you are a subscriber to this website then you can access the reference library and there are catalogues etc., posted there, Jeff.
How did you manage to date this so specifically Matthew? I have just found one for myself today (who needs eBay?) in very nice condition and as I don't already have one I may just hang on to it.
It should have a date stamp on the base Jean, that's mine pictured at the top of this thread. If it's this shape tank and not the previous model, I don't know if any of the earlier type had a date stamp.
Never thought to do look for it there Matt! Mine is stamped exactly the same as yours also with Made in England. Thanks.
