    Hi Mark,

It isn't compulsory to leave any of the old packing in place, so taking it out is not a mistake.

Naptha based panel wipe is fine.
With a pump that size, 5 pumps is plenty. 15 pumps and you have more than enough.

If the lantern won't light, I suspect a blockage, probably in the generator. Although it passed air during your previous tests, it's still possible that the liquid fuel has flushed a particle of dirt up into the jet and blocked it. So I'd check that first.
Whilst you have the generator out, you can check that fuel is getting through from the tank by just opening the valve slowly a little way to see if fuel comes through. If you're not getting fuel through the valve, it may be that a small piece of graphite paper from your previous exploits has lodged in the fuel pathway. Although this is unlikely, it is still possible.

Here's a little something I've sometimes done in the past before I knew about all the fancy solvents which are available, particularly with an old generator. Remove the burner and re-install the generator without the jet. Attach a length of (small bore) plastic tube to the generator and bend it down into a container. With fuel and pressure in the tank, open the valve and let the fuel run into the container. Voila, a nicely flushed generator.

    Henry.

The Coleman Quicklite LQ327 that I posted here was pulsing. The pulsing disappeared at Approximately 25 psi or 1.75kg/cm2.

    Cheers

    Hi Henry,

Next time i have to use the graphite sheet i will pull out the original string as i found it makes it much easier to get the graphite in there in the first place,

Yes it was the jet that was blocked, i removed the tip and opened the valve under pressure and fuel flowed out nicely, i fitted my 220K tip and it worked, i tried to unblock the Q99 tip with the 220K pricker wire but it wouldn't unblock so not sure what to do about that, i may just get another 220 generator,

Good idea about using a length of hose, that's something i might use in the future,

What do you think would cause the pulsing if i had enough pressure in the tank?

Thanks Tony, any guesses on how many pumps would achieve approximately 25psi with that pump of mine?

Would i be better off using 300 cp mantles? i only have Butterfly or Juliands at present.

Hi Mark, You could try "heat and quench" to loosen the obstruction in the jet. Hook the jet on a length of wire so you heat the jet and not your hand. May have to do it a few times but it should work. Don't forget, the obstruction is on the inside so push it through from the outside.

Theories abound of what causes pulsing. Quite often it's a pressure thing as Tony says. How long did you let it burn ? The pulsing often settles down after a while - at least to an acceptable level - but not always.

    Henry.

    Hi Henry

I did try heat and quench a few times with no joy, i used a pair of long nosed pliers to hold it, i only tried unblocking with the 220 pricker wire from the inside, the jet is so small its hard to see with the naked eye but i will try again tomorrow,

I will also try some different mantles, i don't have any fancy Peerless though sadly.

Just an FYI for asbestos string, the old petromax mantles used asbestos strings which are nice and thin and strong. You can still get these old stock mantles, I got mine off eBay.

You could use these for packing and if you're lucky take the strings from a used mantle that needs replacement. Just wash your hands afterwards and don't breath the dust.
