Hi I've found an onion globe on eBay that I'm hoping to buy. Will it fit a Tilley TL10 table lamp? Its a reproduction 182 glass whatever that means. I'm sure you can all find it. I see eBay links are not allowed. It's size is top outer diameter 88mm. Bottom outer diameter 48mm. I'm trying to restore this for my dad in time for Christmas. It's been lying in a barn since I was child. Thanks for your help
The correct globe for a Tilley table lamp is Part No. 182 so the reproduction item you've found on ebay ought to fit. The globe I've just pulled down from the shelf has a lower maximum outside diameter 47mm wide although that's not a critical measurement - but it may give some idea that the other dimensions are also going to be reasonably accurate. My globe has a maximum outer diameter of 85mm but that's not really a critical measurement either - it's the size of the 'neck' just below, that matters. Having said that, the neck of the globe is held in place with spring-loaded pins so there's a degree of flexibility here also. I'm pretty sure the reproduction will fit. By the way, it's only listings for conventional timed ebay auctions that aren't allowed. BIN (Buy-iI-Now) listings are OK here. I think it's a great idea to restore the old Tilley for your Dad's Christmas present. If you need any more help or advice, I'm sure folks here will be all too willing to assist...

@Lampost1 That is an insect screen. There is one at the top of the gallery as well. In Australia they are essential because suicide moths will ruin a mantle in a matter of minutes! On lanterns that I run often I replace the lower insect screen with a priming cup that is fitted so that the moths can't get in the bottom. Cheers Tony
what is the Maths of Moths and Meths - I really must apologise but it seems insect screen hole diameter must be dictated by it if it doubles up with a spirit cup. Coat is on >>>>I'm out of here!
@JonD The maths for moths is quite straightforward, regardless of the meths (am I sounding like a Kiwi?). Working from first principals its major factor will be the relationship between heat and space (hole size), modified by distance. Therefore: the maximum hole size is that which permits a moth (or beetle) to enter the globe, but die from the heat before hitting the mantle. So, if t is heat; ø is hole diameter; and d is distance from hole to mantle, there will be some equation that will express that relationship. Maybe Mr Shouksmith could have a go. Of course moths and beetles have different flammability. I'll take photos this summer to show the death toll in my outside lanterns! I'll get a photo of how I set up a spirit cup on a Tilley (but putting the Tilley wick in the same place works). Cheers Tony

@toad of the cape If it’s the insect screen spring you want, then there are at least 3 different screen/spring arrangements that I’ve seen (I’ll photograph some later today). Each has a different spring; no spring is “for sale”. All springs could be made by hand with the correct material. Do you have a photo of your insect screen? Tony
Yes, ignoring for the moment the varying flammability of the flying insects involved and allowing for the reduction in area of the aperture at the lower end of the globe caused by the diameter of the vapouriser, I believe this just about covers it i.e. the velocity of SHIT (super-heated insect trajectory) is given by:- Makes sense to me, anyway...
Yes, thanks Tony will have a go at making spring, photo option no go at present, but it's the one piece brass type, like the later ones for 246 b,but smaller diameter. A tight U shaped spring though, very similar I suspect. regards Alex
@toad of the cape Yes. Unless you find a donor you’ll have to make the spring. Or you can cheat by putting some brass tubing over the vapouriser to hold the screen in place. Cheers Tony
