What ist this Coleman lantern ? Typ ? Age ? Is this box original or a homemade ? Which mantle do you use for these old Coleman lantern ? Regards,Reinhard
Hi @Reinhard , is there any writing on the bottom of the fount? Coleman started dating their lanterns in 1924. I do not know if your lantern is totally original as it has a hard plastic knob but external pump (no build-in pump). Also, the generator/vapouriser has a build-in pricker which came later. The frame should be turned 180°, the "gap" should be at the filling cap/pump nipple. I'm sure one of our Coleman experts will soon tell us more. Very nice lantern! It will clean up nicely. You can use the N° 20 or N° 21 mantles or equivalent from another maker. Best regards, Wim
@Reinhard You have a fine lantern there! It is straightforward to fettle and operate. Have a look here: Coleman LQ 327 (Canada, 3/26) Cheers Tony
Hello Wim,Jeff and Tony, Many thanks for your help. I Just started cleaning the Coleman lantern. I got the lantern from France. And I think she looks like Gilles (Sellig33) or Titoos lanterns. Would my lantern bei retrofitted with this generator and the bakelite wheel,or does it all belong together like I got it ? Regards, Reinhard
From France it is possibly originally painted and not nickel plated. Was there any evidence of nickel when you first got the lamp? ::Neil::
I have three of them here and they were all painted gold all over. I had not seen one with black painted globe cage. Odd that Coleman exported these lanterns all over the world but only the French retailers sold this painted type. As a consequence they are quite rare. Trouble is once you clean and polish them you lose the originality and rarety. Still nice lamps to restore though. ::Neil::
The black color was subsequently applied inexpertly. Some splashes of paint were still on the tank. Under the black color was "nothing". I examined the parts with a magnifying glass. And I have not found the slightest residue of any other color or nickel plating. In my opinion, this lantern was never painted and not nickel plated. But the steel used was probably not ordinary steel. The inner holes of the lower platform of the globe cage looks exactly like that of Titoo's lantern. Reinhard.
Some people are pretty good at removing old paint and the lack of any plating does suggest it was a French import. Probably the same as this one 1925 Coleman L327-France or maybe a year or two older like this one 1920-1924 Coleman L327 France Both were found in France and had a polished tank and gold painted globe cage. ::Neil::
The old Coleman from France ist alive again !! It lights up with two Petromax 150 CP mantles. After so many years. Regards,Reinhard
That’s excellent, @Reinhard. I always get great pleasure out of seeing these old lanterns burn once more. Cheers Tony
I have now painted the collar and the carrying frame gold. And she got a new mica globe. Regards Reinhard
@Reinhard A very nice lantern, congratulations. These old Coleman lanterns spin my wheels every time, I just love them. Enjoy Pete
