This is the standard FL6 we see often in the UK wide bore pump rear mounted has a metal name plate on later models have a transfer decal. This one has a riveted back on the casing so not the usual one piece casing most often seen. The FL6 had a long production run from 1937 until around 1970! many were made for railway use and contractors.

I also have one of those with the riveted back. It originally comes from the Swedish Civil Defence who used the FL6 back then.
It would be nice to get an approximate date of it.
It has the transfer label, so I would assume the later half or so of the 40's?
Is it known which year the metal plate was changed to the transfer?
And which year did they go to the one-piece casing?

Hi christer i am not sure when the metal name plate was changed to a decal i have always assumed mid forties but but this may not be correct. Trouble with these floodlights the tops got swapped about with the tanks maybe in maintaince departments and such like so you are never sure if it has the original reflector\casing bit. I had a 1937 FL6 this came with a one piece casing so not even sure these rivited ones are that early. If you check my post with the searchlight on you can see its not a one piece casing but has a loose back to it but its not rivited looks like some hard soldering or welding holds it in place, One thing i have noticed is the square box where the casing bolts on to the tank now some of these are fully welded earlier ones i reckon, and the later ones are just spot welded together like your 1953 and 1966 ones you have posted.

    cheers pete

    Thanks.

Yes I see what you mean about the square box. It is actually fully welded on this older one compared to the other two.

I've just seen one of these for sale. Despite liking it very much it's too pricey for me.

What price would you pay for the one we have seen Tony? What would tempt you?

    ... Too hard a question.

If I saw one that was way below that price, but needed a lot of work, I would buy it rather than pay a premium for one that looks good. I like the craft of getting them back running than collecting good looking trophies - it keeps me out of mischief.

Mind you, TW Sands in Melbourne have a couple of big Tilley floodlights that are above the price of the one on the bay of evil.

Yes, agree about buying at a lower premium then tinkering.

I actually wasn't talking about any on the bay, yet I have seen two there since I posted this.

The one I saw is cheaper than the bay ones but still out of my price range.

    Hi Jeff,

The first thing that ran through my mind was "Why did he have to show me this....?" I'm glad you did though as I'd really like that Kayen version.
